Roger Benjamin looks at the work and influence of Matisse from another angle, which is from his writings. From the time Matisse surfaced in 1896 to his composition of Notes dun Peintre, Benjamin states the three ordering principles have been observed (Benjamin 3). Benjamin carefully studies Matisses style and distills certain meanings, leaving behind the notion and opinion of others. The first is the level of linguistic patterns in the piece.
