According to the book Brothers In Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, WWIIs Forgotten Heroes,[1] the introduction of black soldiers into WWII was unplanned and unintentional. But additional bodies of any color were desperately needed because of the enormous losses the U.S. military suffered in the Pacific Theater and in Europe. In a review of the Abdul-Jabbar book, Major Italia A. Carson describes the open hostility, vocal racial slurs and epithets, physical assault, and sometimes even death from townspeople, police and military police in the communities where the blacks enlisted before they ever put on a uniform. Further, once in the military, the barracks segregation and the contempt of the battalion by commissioned and non-commissioned officers[2] was clearly unbearable, but real. Facing such blatant bigotry prior to facing the ferocity of Nazis and Japanese was a tall order, but obviously the black soldiers stood up to the pressure
