But given the racism characteristic of America during this period, these individuals were polarizing and controversial during the era when they lived. The Civil Rights movement of the 20th century can be seen as beginning after the return of black GIs from World War II. These individuals had fought for freedom abroad and risked their lives for an America that still rejected the status of blacks as equal citizens of the nation. The Democratic Party experienced an ideological split as early as in 1948 because President Truman had signed an executive order mandating racial integration of the arms services in honor of black service during the war......
