Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger
Henry Darger was a fascinating man. He lived in relative isolation
for most of his life, and very few people knew he was an artist. He did
not practice art on a massive scale, with exhibitions and such. It was
only after he died that a massive pile of his work was discovered in his
apartment. In death, Henry Darger became an art star.
What I like best about Henry Darger's work is the fact that he
created his own world through his imagination. So much contemporary art
that we see these days seems to be very cynical. Too many artists try to
make offensive gestures, just for the sake of being shocking. Beneath
this, it seems like they probably do not have a lot to say.
Henry Darger, on the other hand, was clearly an expressive genius.
Had he lived to see his fame, I am sure he would have a lot of fascinating
things to tell us about his work. Instead, we get to guess at the meaning
behind so much of it.
