Iran is a large country, has petroleum resources, and borders Iraq. Without some semblance of peace and compromise, any Middle Eastern or Iraqi policy that allows a U.S. withdrawal is somewhat dependent upon Iran (LaFranchi, 2006). After years of stalling, the world understanding that there was electoral fraud in Iranian elections, that the use of enriched fuels are not totally designed for peaceful purposes, and through modern cell phone and social network technology showing a disaffected population, the choice is for the global community, primarily the United States, to walk away and pretend Iran is not a threat, or take a realist position. Realism acknowledges that Iran feels isolated and threatened and that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, regardless of how unpalpable that might be. So, in order to perpetuate peace in the Middle East and a general movement away from State sponsored terrorism, it is realistic to show the world that the U.S. can still lead in difficult situations.
