In some ways, it is interesting to note that even though Confucianism and legalism predate the European philosophers John Locke and Thomas Hobbes by centuries, these same basic questions would be played out in European society from 1500 onward. There are several basic core philosophical differences between the two ideologies that essentially rest on a single premise: are humans born essentially good, cooperative, and open; or are they born in a state of ignorance that must be molded and controlled by society? Confucius, and later Locke, embrace the former while legalism, and Thomas Hobbes, see a much darker individual, certainly more in need of basic structure.
