One of the major themes of this story has got to be discovery as the reader learns of Vladeks fear of being found by the Nazis as well as his own discovery when it comes to dealing with the atrocities of the Holocaust. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, is Arties discovery of his father through the stories his father tells of the Holocaust and the way in which he is able to find newfound respect for him. Vladek was a grumpy old man as depicted in the opening of Maus, but Artie and the reader discovers throughout the narrative, that the Holocaust has shaped his entire human experience including his relationships with his now deceased wife, his new wife, and his son. For all of these reasons, Maus gives the Holocaust learner a unique and fresh viewpoint on how the Holocaust affected not just one individual but the people closest to him
