Historically, African-American physicians were denied hospital staff privileges in America because of race. Prior to the civil rights movement of the 1960s, African Americans were denied access to equal facilities by whites, and wards, floors and even hospitals were segregated (Dennis, 2001, p.16). Board certification exams were often subjectively administered, and thus many African-Americans were unjustly denied certification before the civil rights movement......
