Raising of Lazarus the work of Jacopo Tintoretto
...... To the right of her in the painting, Jesus stands in an elongated form. A halo can be seen around his head and he is wearing bright red and blue clothing. He is the tallest figure in the painting and the only one that does not have all or part of another body overlapping his. This would certainly suggest his importance in the scene. His face is visible in profile and is the face of Jesus that one expects to see in Renaissance paintings. Martha seems to be the connection between Jesus and Lazarus as she reaches out one hand to Jesus and her brothers hand reaches across her toward Jesus
Lazarus is to the left of Martha and is seen as though he has just exited the tomb. His lower body is wrapped in white cloth representative of burial wrappings. His chest and stomach are exposed and every rib and muscle is carefully details. The detail of these is intensified by the light that falls so distinctly on his mid-section. One bony leg is exposed as he reclines against two supporting men. His face is hidden in shadow, but his arm is outstretched in the direction of Jesus.
