...... In cultural terms, Brown relates that many slaves were brought to Jamaica and elsewhere from Africa. These slaves were absolutely robbed of all that they had known in the world. They were completely stripped from their families and their belongings, and required to work for often cruel colonists. Here death and power also wield their significant presence. According to Brown, what these slaves had left to bind them together is their concepts and perceptions surrounding death. They were bound together by it and understood it as a part of their lives. Being the end of the individual but not of the collective, it was viewed as an instrument of power against the Europeans. For the slaves, there was always someone to carry on the legacy. The Europeans were obliged to import increasing amounts of colonists. This was the power of the slaves, as opposed to the power of the Europeans, which was wealth
And indeed, it was this wealth that attracted colonists to a country that killed them by the hundreds and the thousands. Brown notes that many came to the country in order to make their fortunes, even if they had to sacrifice their lives for this[3]. They
