The United States of America has been mentioned as one of the more liberal territories towards LGBT people; however, these persons are still faced with legal challenges which are not experienced by citizens who are non-LGBT. There are a few states that have legalized same-sex marriage with most of them still having it illegal, this despite the fact that sex between individuals of the same sex is legal nationwide. It is worth noting that many states outlaw discrimination on basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Additionally, federal law punishes hates crimes based on gender identity or sexual orientation. A huge variation is also experienced in adoption policies with regard to lesbian and gay parents with some states allowing adoption by same-sex couples and others banning unmarried couples from adopting (Ottosson, 50)

A close look at the North American laws on LGBT rights indicate that homosexual acts are legal in all the states, however not all the states recognize same-sex unions and the federal government does not as well recognize such unions.
