Business relationships are tempered by conflict, compromise, negotiation and cooperation. Effective communication methods are required in order to navigate these various interactions and to adapt our own strategies accordingly. To the point, communication strategies must be designed to undermine the anxieties and obstructions that arise between differing business parties. As Griffin (2006) explains it, effective communication is made possible by our ability to mindfully manage our anxiety and reduce our uncertainty about ourselves and the people with whom we are communicating" (Griffin, p. 496). The notion that an individual may better facilitate such communication by simply evading the sense of anxiety elicited by an uncertainty over his own capacity to represent himself, and to be understood, informs a conception that is central to self-representation in a business relationship. That is, with the reduction of this self-directed anxiety, we may better reduce the presence of anxiety and its consequent compensatory devices, thereby allowing for the natural reduction of uncertainty regarding the communicative impulses of our conversational partners. This promotes a more natural tendency toward trust. Often, bridging the philosophical gaps between differing individuals and departments can be a considerable challenge to proper and effective organizational communication.
