Postmodernism: Nietzsche, Adorno, and Benjamin

The foundation of Frederich Nietzsches philosophy is often called an aesthetic onenamely that all of human history is divided between two competing artistic impulses, that of the Apollonian and the Dionysian. These two Greek gods embody a striving for rationality versus a striving for a kind of primordial, irrational pleasure. Postmodernism has embraced the aesthetic of the Dionysianthe irrational, the primordial, the nonlinear, and above all Dionysian aesthetic of inversion, of questioning of all social rules. This can be seen in the writings of Michel Foucault and his rigorous questioning of what is taken to be natural, namely how the body has been constructed by law, psychology, and culture. The postmodern aesthetic views constructions, identities, and rules in an ironic fashion, and by putting them in quotes encourages the viewer or reader to take them less seriously.

Theodor Adorno, predating Foucault, stressed Marx's emphasis on art's embeddedness in society as a whole, believing that art did not exist within the individual, outside of culture (Zuidervaart 2007). Adorno also provided the postmodern aesthetic with another of its fundamental elements, namely its lack of linearity.
