Business Intelligence Creating, Implementing and Using Business Intelligence in Clinic and Resort Cases

In the process of effective decision making for improving opportunities and performance of a business, a vital role is played by Business Intelligence (BI). Business Intelligence Systems understand the environments of organizations and follow a systematic information process. These systems have huge development costs but are widely created, implemented and used in mid-sized organizations, hospitals, resorts and hotels. The purpose of writing this essay is to analyze the lessons that I can learn from the implementation of business intelligence systems in clinics and resorts. Also I will analyze the role of social and technical systems in an organization.

Creating, Implementing and Using Business Intelligence in Clinic and Resort Cases

Business Organizations meet ever increasing demands and competition of the business; they have to make decisions using appropriate knowledge as it plays an effective role in decision making. The business information is implied in past decisions, data, external and internal environments, climatic conditions, technical advancements and government policies. In such scenarios knowledge management systems and knowledge repositories have been evolved. These systems, such as Business Intelligence (BI), generate appropriate knowledge. This essay is based on the extraction of lessons that should be learned from the creativity, implementation and use of business intelligence systems in clinics and resorts.

I would support the fact that organizations started effective decision making once they implemented Business Intelligence within their system. Business Intelligence provides analysis and consolidation of data; also the capacity of data that has to be processed into executable information of decision making. There are various information systems and Business Intelligence (BI) is one of them. Inumerable Clinics, hospitals, hotels and resorts are making money through the implementation of the Business Intelligence. Going through the implementation and use of BI in health care institutes and resorts can make us learn several lessons. How, where, when and why Business Intelligence systems were implemented in clinics and resorts? An answer to this question will make me write this essay successfully.

Before moving further it is important to know the basics of business intelligence tools and how they are implemented within any organization. Business Intelligence (BI) is described as a wide category of technologies and applications for collecting, storing, and analyzing data for helping enterprise users to make good business decisions.

Through implementation of BI, the organizations can easily access, analyze, understand and act on business information, anywhere and anytime. "BI systems provide sophisticated functions for effectively analyzing business information to support and improve management decision making. BI systems build upon integration of Databases, Data warehousing technologies, Data Mining technologies, Web Services and Advanced Visualized Interfaces" (Venkatadari, Sastry, & Manjunath, 2010). Organizations focus on acquiring customers, out-spacing the competition and increasing profitability and revenues. In order to improve their operating efficiencies and to turn data into meaningful and useful information, they need Business Intelligence. Medium sized organizations are now able to implement business decisions quickly through BI. "BI spectrum is very broad in terms of its tools and functionality. At its core are the traditional capabilities of query, reporting, and analysis. This is complemented by data quality and data integration to accurately and consistently consolidate data from multiple sources" (Schiff, 2007)

An organization employs various individuals; they work under the organization's environment using the available technical systems. Every organization is based on social, technical and socio-technical systems. A social system present within an organization is based on the people-organization relationships. The organizational behavior interprets these relationships in order to achieve social, organizational and human objectives; hence building good relationships. Structure of technicalities present within an organization is the technical system. The most important is socio-technical system, which is an approach, used to recognize interaction between people and technology present within the system.

BI systems have enabled various health care centers, clubs and resorts to keep a track of their data, to execute effective decision making and to generate revenue quickly.

"There is the growing realization that many organizations are losing money when it comes to managing patient information and operational flow…causing a rapid increase in interest in BI. A strategic approach to BI identifies and plugs gaps that appear within the chain of activities and can lead to inefficient care" (The McGraw-Hill Companies Incorporation, 2009). Healthcare centers still lag behind in adopting BI; but they have now shifted to statistical thinking from tactical thing. They have achieved evident results such as cost savings, improved margins, improved patient satisfaction...

...

The motivations for health care organizations to focus on implementing BI were cost savings.
The widening use of BI enables greater performance. Integrating clinical and operational performance can empower Healthcare Providers and organizational executives to make informed, timely decisions based on accurate, information that can impact the financial viability of their units and organizations (Jackson, 2009). Also "the timing for implementing BI is excellent. Rapid advances in processing speed, innovative data warehouse design and pioneering concepts of data display such as dashboards are opening up new opportunities for data management" (The University of Arizona, 2009).

Utilization of Business intelligence in clinics and healthcare centers has enabled them to eliminate waste data; they store excess data to recoup and examine denied clients. Several clinics have implemented a program of balanced scorecard. In this way they have improved their gross margins. Researches show that some of the best healthcare organizations in the world have achieved an increase of 15% in the satisfaction of patients through utilization of analytic and business intelligence tools. These organizations are able to identify non-compliant and high-risk patients. Nowadays healthcare organizations are focusing on better cost availability.

They have started to manage staff, resources and billing through the service line analysis. These service lines include intensive care, emergency medicine and cardiac surgery. The best use of implementation of BI systems in clinics and healthcare organizations is the sorting of patients by provider and clinic. The patient information can now be sent to the appropriate consultant (doctor). This is done in graphical manner as it is easily understood. This saves time and effort of both the patient and doctor. Business Intelligence systems offer utilization of such functions that show the necessary back-end work. This comprises of demonstration of preparatory work for reconciliation of built data warehouses and disparate systems.

Nowadays clubs and resorts offer new technological services to staff and members. They have added child care, fitness clubs and variety of menus. This keeps on changing the expectations of the resort's members. They have started to hire well educated and intelligent individuals as they have to make their resorts successful. Business Intelligent Software (BIS) is utilized to fully sort and present data that can reveal variety of trends within the entertainment business. It supports decision-making and integrates corporate data. The Business Intelligence software transforms raw data after integrating it. It allows the management team of resorts and clubs to find out the associated trends, to uncover weaknesses and to discover new opportunities.

Business Intelligence software is employed and developed in an effective and innovative way. Availability of rooms in resorts and hotels can easily be viewed hence adding speed to the working of the entire system. This software identifies Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These are attributes and measures that indicate business performance. "Business intelligence makes information easily available to the users, in simple, straightforward business language. Club managers working with business intelligence experts, retrieve information needed and makes it available to all users, in an easily understood format" (Rudd, 2008).

A chart below shows the statistical analysis (www.prosperity-planet.blogspot.com) of categories of Business Intelligence. BI has four categories and they are inter-related with one another as shown in the diagram and graph.

The amount of data collected by healthcare organizations is increasing day by day. According to my analysis, adopting and implementing BI solutions is the answer to challenge of improvement in the satisfaction level of the patient. The healthcare organizations have to meet stringent regulatory standards; they have to reduce medical costs, which is possible through implementation of Business Intelligence systems. Clinics and healthcare organizations can spread BI technology successfully. They can do so by creating an accountability culture in the deployment of balanced scorecards and dashboards. They can go beyond the agreement of top management and can improve capabilities to keep a track of patients and assets. The healthcare organizations can incorporate information from diverse clinical systems and business systems. Through BI, the diverse clinics can involve physicians in the process of planning and can conduct training courses; this will enable them to prove the benefits of Business Intelligence.

The internet and technology are such drivers that have taken management of resorts and clubs into the future. The resorts in future will operate with greater interchangeability of information and technologies. The overall global operations have been revolutionized and reshaped due to the internet and technology. Service speed and process of cut cost has increased. Value added products have been found and up-to-date technology is used to stay current. In this kind of phase, Business Intelligence (BI) has allowed analysts and authors to solve complicated programming and…
