More alarming, of this one percent, 26% is spent merely on legal concerns such as enforcing of laws and regulations. In regards to public health expenditures solely, distribution of resources is fairly distributed among five major categories which consist of administrative services at 20 percent; environmental health at 20 percent; communicable diseases receives an estimated 19 percent; maternal and child health services receives 19 percent and adult health services receives approximately 23 percent. With this equal mix of expenditures, New Jersey can ill afford to cut already strained programs.
2) Describe one community health practice in your community that is based on evidence. What is the source of the research study?
One community health practice utilized in New Jersey is that of the use of internet and information technology to improve performance. New Jersey uses information technology to further advance the detection and management of diseases within its borders. One such method is a form of informatics called Vista. The VA has the largest enterprise-wide health information system uses informatics within the New Jersey area. As the largest enterprise wide health information system Vista helps more people per dollar invested in the system. This is otherwise known as "economies of scale." Because of this phenomenon, the VA can service more people for less absolute dollars, thus justifying its costs. Vista provides care to over 4 million veterans within over 1000 facilities, many of which are located in the New Jersey area. In addition, the Vista electronic medical records system is estimated to improve efficiency by 6% per year. This form of information system integration also improves aaccuracy substantially. For example, Vista has allowed the VA to achieve a pharmacy prescription accuracy rate of 99.997%, outperforming most public sector hospitals. Finally, the system helps reduce costs associated with patient security by minimizing human interaction within the system as a whole. By not allowing human being to physically handle records, New Jersey is reducing cost associate with identity theft.
