Within the older models of health care delivery the sharing of information even between two physicians was difficult. Though much more health care was delivered through primary care specialists still existed and the sharing of information between specialists and primary doctors was challenged. The physician primary and or specialized had to rely mostly on patient reports of health events and treatments offered by another delivery model. The model often left lay people i.e. patients in a position of vulnerability as individuals with limited knowledge of health care were challenged to offer the  right needed information for the referred provider. Limited exchanges in phone calls and patient records transfers was the only option where as with electronic medical records the transfer of information is far faster and more thorough. Though patient reporting and patient history is still a huge part of medical care especially in referral situations the answers to long term health treatment as well as health history can be seen by a new provider in a format that is concise and easily understandable to the provider.

In addition to the potential and real advantageous impactsto the health care industry, with regard to EHRs there are also several social impacts that are definitely worth exploring. There are foundational possible and real social issues that will be discussed in this section; data security, privacy protection and regulations developed to ensure them.

Health information can be used in a variety of ways both legally and illicitly to harm individuals. The information one submits to their doctor or treatment regimen they receive form their doctor as well as the identifying personal, financial and health information stored in a health delivery EHR can be used to perpetrate fraud against individuals or organizations or can even be used as a basis for defamation of character in one s personal life or in litigation. The security of electronic health records is essential to the development of a trustworthy system. Personal health information has always been thought of as confidential but has only recently begun to be seen as in need of direct protection, and especially now that such information is in a fallible electronic format as well as a system that ultimately allows subversion of…[continue]
