What are reasons a police officer needs to use coercive force?

According to Carl B. Klockars, the basic function of policing is dealing with any problems that may require the use of coercive force (Dempsey and Forst, 2011). Provide examples of situations where law enforcement officers may use coercive force. Of your examples, identify which one(s) include reason(s) allowing officers to use lethal or deadly force? Which examples call for less-than-lethal force?

A police officer uses coercive force to get a person to obey an order or command. The fact that the officer has a gun and other weapons, as well as legal authority, can be used in a coercive manner, to make a person do what he or she is told. Some examples include pulling someone over for a traffic infraction (which would require non-lethal force), to negotiating a standoff with a gunman (which could require lethal force in some cases).
