Write an 8-10 page paper on a topic of your choice that focuses on one of the stimulus/recovery packages passed or proposed (ie., economic stimulus, housing bailout). You should give an overview of the economic environment in which we are currently operating and briefly discuss how we got to this point. This overview should be a concise summary and be no longer than 2 pages. (If you choose later to focus on the economic stimulus package, this overview could be very broad. If you choose something more specific such as the foreclosure package, you might want to focus your overview on the housing market only.) You should describe the package (or piece of package if you would like to focus instead on one component only) and the way in which legislators/regulators intend this package to stimulate the economy (or a specific sector of the market/economy that are the intended effects of the package (both short-term and long-term) on things like GDP, inflation, and interest rates? In this discussion, you should address the changes that we would need to see in the economy in order for the stimulus package to have its intended effect and also things that might cause problems with the package and ultimately lead to less than optimal results. As a final part to this discussion, please include your opinion on how you think the package you discuss will impact the economy and what you foresee as some important areas that changes need to be made to lead to a quicker recovery. The discussion surrounding your opinion should be at least 2 pages of the final paper. You must cite sources and include a works cited page also. The final opinion section should be your opinion and should not use cites.

I would like to do a PhD research program on the link between economic development and Information and Communication technology (ICT) and poverty reduction. I would like to use Ethiopia as a case study or any other African country. Here my basic summery.
Every nation has embarked on economic development and an intensive usage of Information and communication technology, ICT in every socio-economic activities, health, education, politics, and production and so on. Ethiopia can not be exception, however since Ethiopia is a third world country the development and the usage of information and communication technology is wither it is in early stage or it is not exist at all. Arguably, the twenty century economic development is depending on the application and the integration of information and communication technology with all socio-economic activities. For this India can be a good example.
Some evidence indicate that some countries like Ethiopia may not have right ICT policy, as result their ambition using ICT as development vehicle has been hindered. The question is; what is the level of ICT usage in Ethiopia? Which economic policies are support the development and which policies are hinder the development? How can Ethiopia learn from develop country? Is there a link between economic development and the usage of ICT? Is there a link between poverty and digital gap? If there is, what is it? What is the best economic policy and economic environment for ICT development? How Ethiopia will narrow the digital divide? How ICT help to reduce poverty?

SECTION 1
This section is on the social and cultural environments of the country Ireland. This should describe the demographics of Ireland and its people and discuss the cultural indicators of those people. In developing this section you may want to use a particular product or service that is being marketed in the country and discuss those cultural variables that may have to be taken into consideration when marketing those products. Also, discuss the cultural differences an American may encounter when visiting as a salesperson or on extended assignment and prepare a trip plan for a business person to visit Ireland at the end of this semester.
SECTION 2
This section is on the financial and economic environment of Ireland. Assess the economic conditions of the country. You can obtain information(for the last five year period) from the International Financial Statistics (Reference) my professor stated. The financial environment report of Ireland should examine fluctuations (and the reasons for them) and foreign exchange controls. Illustrate both in a tabular form and graphical form, the prices of the target currency ($ per unit of foreign currency) over time. Also, show year-by-year changes in the price of your target currency in the table. In most cases, you can obtain this information from sources like the International Monetary Fund and The World Bank.
In addition, you should look at the quality of life variables (phones, TV's, automobiles, education rates, etc.) and compare them with that of the US or some other reference country. To obtain more recent information, it is advisable to look at the Wall Street Journal Index to find relevant economic information on Ireland.
Suggested Guidelines provided by my professor : If possible, find the following information on Ireland for the last five years by consulting the International Financial Statistics.
Interest Rates, Total (Hard Currency) Reserves, Consumer Price Index, Total Merchandise Exports/Imports, GDP, Income Inflow/Outflow, Population, Foreign Direct Investment, & Exchange Rate.
Comment on the Economic Health of Ireland, for example:
- What is the size of the economy in Ireland? GDP Measure of Size
- What portion of the GDP is comprised of Agriculture, Industry, and Service?
- How well off are Ireland's people? - Look at quality of life indicators and consumption indicators.
- Examine each one, the above mentioned calculations and look at the trend of the past five years.
- Do you think Ireland is making progress or not? Real and Nominal GDP/Capita growth Rate
Assignment 1: The Business Environment
Due Week 4 and worth 280 points
Write a 3 page paper in which you:
Describe the role of business in the economy.
Compare and contrast the roles of for-profit and nonprofit organizations in the economy.
Discuss the impact of current fiscal and monetary policy on the economy.
Select a product or service with which you are familiar and outline a strategy for accessing global markets.
Select an organization with which you are familiar and discuss the impact of that organizations level of social responsibility on a stakeholder group of your choice.
Your assignment must:
Be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the tile of the assignment, the students name, the professors name, the course title, and the date.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
Describe the role of business in the economy, including the factors of production and the key dimensions of the business environment.
Classify the basic types of economic systems, the elements of private enterprise, and the various degrees of competition in a market economy.
Describe the global economic environment that impacts U.S. business.
Use technology and information resources to research issues in business.
Write clearly and concisely about business issues using proper writing mechanics.
Country Study
To prepare a paper of approximately 750 words in length (3 pages double-spaced with one inch margins) - plus additional pages for graphs and references - on the economy of a country other than the United States that is or has experienced economic problems. I expect a minimum of six references, excluding Wikipedia (not a recognized reference). The study will cover recent macro problems. Do not go back further than 5 years unless there are compelling economic issues that may explain current economic problems. E.g., current U.S. recession has roots in the 2008-2009 financial market collapse.
Organizing the Report:
The paper will be divided into three main parts with sub-heading separating
each part:
1. A. The economic environment: A brief description.
For example: mixed economy with some Government owned entities (U.S.,
UK.),
Mixed economy with significant Government owned enterprise (Russia,
Egypt), or
Centrally planned economy (Cuba)
B. Recent macroeconomic data:
Use the internet and/or library database resources to obtain the macroeconomic data (e.g. GDP growth, unemployment rate, inflation rate etc.) that best characterizes the trend and current state of your selected country?s economy. Prepare a brief summary of your data in table format showing minimum of 3 consecutive years. Include an earlier year if needed to show dramatic change. E.g. You might show high U.S. unemployment in 2009 to compare with recent 3 years.
2. Describe the major economic problems:
E.g., inflation, unemployment, GDP growth/decline, noncompetitive
domestic industries. Use GDP and other economic data to support your position. This section should include the Government?s efforts (if any) to solve these economic problems. Discuss role of international organizations such as the IMF and World Bank, if relevant, in dealing with macro problems.
3. Your recommendations to the Government. Based on your findings in part 2 Your reputation in solving macro-economic problems is well known to the Government and they have asked for your recommendations. The main part of your paper will be to recommend policy options that could reduce or resolve the problems described in part 2.
8More about the report
Assume your paper is intended for senior management. The challenge is to bring together information from a variety of sources that is succinct and informative. As a very busy head of this consulting firm, I will return any report where the narrative section is longer than three pages.
Schedule:
Your report (hard copy) is due no later than November 27th. There will be a penalty of 5 points for every day (not class) the paper is late unless you have an exceptional reason (hospitalized for organ transplant or incarcerated).
Citation of sources: Your report should demonstrate that you used a variety of different sources to craft a narrative in your own words. I.e., you did more than download material from one or more electronic sources and just did a cut-and?past-job (a no-no). Most paragraphs, therefore, would include several different citations (see appendix). Your report should be based on a minimum of six references (Wikipedia not acceptable as reference) reflecting different perspectives i.e., the host and U.S. Government sources and non- government commentators. Emphasis should be given to non-government sources. Failure to include citations in the body of the narrative will result in a one-grade deduction for the paper.
Bibliography/References/Citations: The bibliography is a list of publications the author reviewed in researching his/her paper. The references are the publications you use to prepare your paper and are listed in the Bibliography. Given the limited number of sources used for your report, the bibliography and references would be the same. The citations are shorthand to identify the references and placed in the text or as footnotes. These are a very important part of a research paper and reflect the authors? scholarship. Points will be deducted for failing to use a standard format.
You must follow a standard format for the citations/footnotes and references -- the Chicago Manual of Style for Footnotes and Bibliographies or the American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Manual. The APA style format for electronic sources can be found on www.apastyle.org/elecsource. Ask Librarian if you need help preparing references and citations.
The Appendix has an example of how citations are used in the text and the link with references. Use quotations sparingly as extensive use implies you are just copying from a source. The citation shows reader the authoritative source used in the narrative.
9
Sources for Information
State and Commerce Department publications give an overview of economic and political issues. These publications will give you a general idea of the major economic problems and government policies. Publications of the IMF, World Bank, OECD, or CIA are possible sources for historical information about your country (they have web sites). Data in these sources, however, are one or two years old. Current information can be found in academic journals, magazines and newspapers. Economic and business magazines will have articles reporting on and analyzing a country?s economic problems. Look for articles in Fortune, Forbes, Business Week, or The Economist. The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times also have good and objective articles. There are also regional publications such as The Far Eastern Economic Review, South Asian Economic Journal, and Latin American Business Review.
Limit your use of official sources from the U.S. and Government of the country on which you are reporting. Governments tend to emphasize positive information and occasionally downplay or ignore negative factors. U.S. Government reports, for political or diplomatic reasons, may gloss over some negative factors in a country?s economy (I used to write some of that stuff). At least three or your sources should be from non-government publications

Grade: Your grade will reflect the following:
? How well does your paper present the economic issues you cover?
? How well do your recommendations reflect an understanding of the economic
issues involved?
? How well did you integrate information from different sources to make
an informative report?
? Did you review/edit your report for spelling and grammatical errors?
? Did you use a standard format for listing citations and references.

this is my draft personal statement
Although I come from Japan, which is generally considered more insular. I grew up in a household where my family, entrepreneur with a strong influence on me, introduced me to a more cosmopolitan approach to life. I soon realized that Economics would be the best avenue to purse my interest in business and culture.
Because my parents work required traveling. I was fortunate enough to travel more than 20 countries from an early age, At the same time. Though I was at first bewildered in that multicultural milieu, by traveling and struggling with culture shock, I developed an entirely different view. I realized that I truly appreciate learning and experiencing other cultures from which I can expect to learn new phenomena on an everyday basis. Simultaneously, I also realized that I can never understand other people if I do not know myself. That is what motivates me to challenge love for absorbing whatever options available for me to pursue my interests in learning other culture and language. Since My parents restrict about me to go study abroad, it motivate me to learn and gain skill for speaking in English. When I was 15 years old, I started to attend for English speech contest, got First Prize award. This award motivated me a lot for my speaking skill. When Im 17 yr old, got 2nd prize for speech contest again. Through these great experience gave me to an endurance and confidence in mind about achieving thing in my life.
When I was in Japan, however, it was difficult to keep my broadened worldview since my parent didnt allow me live in foreign country just for myself. Also I truly believe that my exposure to the world convinced me that the homogenized, exam-centered Japanese education system would only compel me to study abroad. As I researched my options, I saw the American educational system as more flexible with greater opportunities geared to my interests. West Coast colleges especially interested me for their greater multicultural ambiance that would offer an education beyond the classroom, enriching it both academically and spiritually. I have been blessed with an early awareness of life focus and parents who supported those burgeoning interest.
After I made a big decision about coming to Los Angeles without parents support, was really big progress for me. I decided to save money for school in America, so spent two years working restlessly , at the radio station as disk jockey, tutor, restaurant, models for bridal shows in Japan. After I came to America, I surprised that lots of moneys were gone for buying car, textbooks, and paying rent. But lots of my new friends were very supportive and kind, so had never felt miserable feeling during that time. But paying everything from my own pocket was not easy for me. International student fee was so expensive, so needed to work after school till 2am. But I didnt like to give up easily, so I learned to be in penitent and strong in my mind all the time. I used to tell myself, whatever the hardship you have is always you can resolve by yourself. Through these experiences lead me to become an independent as a woman, and gained strength that can endure pain. I would like to invest myself for learning more of United states economy, world markets, how do governors get over this recession, willing to learn origin of economics theories at USC to become a successful woman. Recently I married, my life was changed, and got a fortune to work at Japanese trade company in Los Angeles, Currently I work as Manager for product development, also taking care of all the US trade shows for exhibit, selling products to TV shopping channels. Gradually, Im learning the basic of business skill everyday. However, I cant make right decision in business since I dont have enough skill to read economic environment. I would also want to see the Asian side of perspective of US economic system as well. I believe These skills would be my great strength to making decision for future. . I truly believe that my mission to remedy this problematic situation can only be accomplished through top-notch education at the University of California, Los Angeles . I firmly believe that I can best develop as an entrepreneur in a world that mirrors its complexity. I aspire to use the knowledge of Economics to establish better bridges between Japan and the United States, especially outside of the business world, since there remains insufficient information flow from Japan to the U.S.. With faith in my abilities and in me, all things are possible.
There are faxes for this order.
I would like user "bolavens" to complete this assignment. Thanks.
Fiscal Policy: Government Expenditures and Revenues, Budget, National Debt
Monetary and fiscal policies, and the trends in the economic environment over time, can have both subtle and major affects on almost all organizations. The purpose of this SLP assignment is to have you examine your organization regarding how it is affected by these economic variables and policies.
You are to place yourself in the position of being a paid lobbyist for your organization. Pick two or three major fiscal or monetary policy initiatives you would lobby Congress about. However, this is not in general, this is for your organization, not for the economy as a whole, so make sure to take that specific focus. Again, if you're using an unconventional organization, you may have to get a little creative here.
My organization for this assignment is FedEx.
1. As your organization's lobbyist, what would you like to see done by the Federal government that would be of help to your organization? This could be what the government could do or what they could stop doing. It can be all fiscal, all monetary, or a mix of each type of policy. As a lobbyist it is not your job to be concerned with the deficit, or the environment, or the general health of the financial system (unless, of course, you are lobbying for an environmental, financial, or deficit reduction group). Your answer to this question can give an interesting perspective as to how lobbying can distort economic policy and decisions. CAUTION: I am not looking for general comments that could apply to the country as a whole or any given organization, what I want is comments that are relevant specifically to your organization.
There are three articles below on the pros and cons of lobbying, feel free to google the subject to find more:
http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=654
http://www.chiff.com/society/lobby.htm
http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/09/13/obama-lobbying-idUSN1348032520090913
2. The majority of lobbying efforts centers around fiscal policy so we will stick with that area. Please discuss your opinions on lobbying regarding if it is useful and should continue as is, if it should continue but with constraints to limit how much is done, or if it should be eliminated.
SLP assignment expectations:
Use information from the modular background readings as well as any good quality resource you can find. Make sure you cite all resources you use and provide a reference list at the end of your paper.
LENGTH: 2-3 typed and double-spaced pages.
In addition to the overall quality, depth, grammar, and organization of the paper, the following will, in particular, be assessed:
1. Analytical ability in relating Federal policies to the specifics of your organization.
2. Your ability to relate Federal government activity to your specific organization.
o Research a capital purchase, costing more than $5,000, that your company could benefit from. Examples include a new X-ray machine, an MRI processor, software for filing patient records, a research library, or any large item that your company might use.
o Identify the management goals that expenditure would support. Management goals might include revenue, improvement, productivity, quality assurance, employee development, or management services consultant packages.
o Explain how the item could enhance the economic environment of the organization.
o Identify the organizational goals the expenditure would support. Goals might include patient care, medical and allied health education, community service, cost containment, leadership role, and clinical research.
o Explain how the expenditure would relate to the needs of the organization. Explain how it would be beneficial to the organization.
o Justify the expense to the organization. Relate the reasons to the hospital goals, including departmental and management goals, and how the acquisition might be beneficial.

Task 4A
Evaluate the impact of images in the economic environment on Balfour Beatty.
Grading Tips
Evaluation is about considering in detail the positives of something and coming to conclusions as a result of this analysis.
To answer this task you will need to review and discuss changes in the business cycle, government spending, fiscal policy, monetary policy, global developments and the impact of the European Union
To evaluate this case you should outline the key positive changes that have been taken in plave in the economic environment and compare them with the most significant negative changes that you have identified, from the point of view of Balfour Beatty http://www.balfourbeatty.com/
You might also look at possible economic changes that have are on the horizon to see how Balfour Beatty might prepare itself for these changes. You should be able to identify these possible changes by reviewing recent articles in the press.
