Phase 3 Discussion Board
Deliverable Length: 4-5 paragraphs
Details: Your cousin's latest interest is The International Monetary Fund, about which you are now chatting online.
The IMF was established by the United Nations in 1944 to provide loans to countries in financial distress at a relatively low interest rate. Nations having balance-of-payments problems can borrow from the IMF for short time periods and such loans include economic and financial stipulations on the debtor nation. Typically, such stipulations require that the debtor nation follow an austerity program that limits government spending, domestic consumption, and imports.
Your cousin wants to know, what do you think about the goal of the IMFs aid to distressed countries? What has been the controversy surrounding the IMF austerity programs? What are examples of the IMF successes and failures?
In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

Details: For multinational corporations, friction costs arise where practices of the firm are seen by the public as exploitative or unethical. These actions lead to public criticism and loss in the value of the companys goodwill and may translate into measurable sales losses.
There is growing evidence that a corporation's image can become a competitive advantage due to positive gains in consumer approval. In the U.S., there are a number of indications that so-called "green consumers" represent an increasingly important niche in various sales markets, and companies that are environmentally exemplary and go beyond the minimum legal requirements can gain market advantages.
Empirical studies reveal a positive correlation between ethical conduct in a corporation and job satisfaction. The studies reported by the Novaris Foundation for Sustainable Development (http://www.novartisfoundation.org/) indicate that structures within a corporation that transmit an ethical and cooperative commitment to employees boost motivation to work. In this part of the course, one major issue we examine is how the international monetary system works, including how the value of a currency is determined. As always, this assignment requires background research in order to adequately answer the questions.
For finding and plotting exchange rates, I recommend using the internet which has some excellent sites for doing this.
1. Choose three of the following currencies: Japanese Yen, Indian Rupee, Korean Won, Brazilian Real, and Mexican Peso. Plot their exchange rate relative to the U.S. Dollar over the latest two-year period over 2003-05, starting immediately. The exchange rates that you plot can be based on daily, weekly or monthly averages (not quarterly or yearly).
2. Interpret the graphs: What is going on with value of each currency? What accounts for the fluctuations that you see in each of the two exchange rates over this time? As discussed in class and the text, you will need to consider macroeconomic, political and other changes in order to understand why these currencies are fluctuating in the manner that they are.
3. What does your data suggest about engaging in international trade AND foreign direct investment in each of these three countries? Explain in detail.
International capital movements can bring major gains both to the lending or investing countries and to the borrowing countries, through intertemporal trade and through portfolio diversification for the lenders/investors. But international lending and borrowing is not always well-behaved, financial crises are recurrent.
Develop a detail paper analyzing the empirical reasons for the international financial crisis and the role of the International Monetary Fund.
Paper structure as follow
*Introduction
*International capital flows
*The International Monetary Fund
* International Lending and borrowing between industrialized countries
*International Lending by industrialized countries to developing nations
*Reasons behind International Financial Crisis
-Overlending and Overborrowing: The Asian Crisis of 1997
-Exogenous Shocks
-Exchange Rate Risk
-Large Increases in Short-Term Debt to Foreigners
-Contagion
*Resolving the Crisis
*Rescue Package
*Debt Restructuring
*Conclusions
