Please complete a 5 page outline for me on the media representations of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict surrounding the Munich Olympics in 1972. For primary sources, I would like you to use Spielberg's Munich and Bud Greenspan's "1972 Munich Games: Bud Greenspan Remembers." Secondary sources can include various news articles and scholarly journals. First begin with a brief history of the massacre that occurred at the Munich Games then compare and contrast the representations of the conflict across both films and news media. In addition, please support the following statement in your outline of Spielberg's Munich: "Munich presents an interesting perspective on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because it portrays Palestinian terrorists as family men and the Israeli actions as possibly murderous and misdirected. Spielberg, unlike the generally biased mass media, succeeds in weaving a plot that criticizes both sides of the conflict for their actions."

Media Representations of Youth
PAGES 8 WORDS 2578

Email [email protected] for the source.

TASK:
Considering the minority group of ?youth? argue how youths have been stereotyped in relation to current issues in the Australian media in 2005. In your introduction give the reasons for your choice. Then, using a range of media texts including newspaper stories (see email of newspaper articles that will be sent) use notions of social identity and categorisation to analyse the language of the texts and therefore the representations of that group - youths. You need to be careful with Internet texts and to use only those associated with major Australian news media outlets.

Objectives:
In this paper
? study recent representations of a minority group in Australia
? examine closely the language used in those representations
? identify some of the stereotypic assumptions involved in that representation
? apply the theoretical concepts we have been discussing
? understand the impact of group identity on representations of minority groups

Analyse the language of the texts to show how the group is constructed and represented in terms of the issue. This involves close textual analysis. For example you should consider paradigmatic and syntagmatic lexical choices and combinations; stereotype construction; categorisation; concepts relating to social and group identities; along with concepts related to media discourse and language analysis.

Please find and refer to at least 10 references, including both books and journal articles for this assignment. The news media texts you use for the analysis do not count towards the 10. The research literature you should consult is broad but should include work on:
? The history of your chosen minority group
? The background to the issue you are focusing on
? Representations of minority groups in general
? Group identity, social identity
? Categorization
? Stereotypes
? Media representations
? Language analysis, especially Discourse Analysis
? Media language

Marking Criteria
The criteria for this assignment are:
? understanding of the situation surrounding the minority group in Australia
? understanding of the issue and its interest to the media
? evidence of research and its incorporation in your findings
? application of theoretical concepts (incl. stereotypes, categorization, social identity etc.)
? selection and use of examples from your texts
? ability to use language analysis to critically appraise the texts
? style, structure and presentation

With precision and clarity, write an essay on media and conflict:

?Choose two or three key ideas from provided sources. Select a recent public conflict (in the last 5 years) and a specific event where it the conflict manifested as a story.
ideas: Hurricane Katrina
Casey Anthony
can choose something else relevant however.
(only topics off limits are the vietnam war, 9/11, and the war in Afghanistan, as these are
covered in some of the sources that I provide)

? Find and examine specific media coverage of your conflict. These are your primary documents (news articles and programs, magazine pieces and features, television shows, etc. ? English-language, of course), and will be the object of your analysis and interpretation. The paper should not center on the history of the conflict itself, but the media?s relationship (representation, construction, etc) with the conflict.

? Use the two or three concepts from sources to interpret, and assess the contours and consequences of the media?s relationship with the conflict.

PAPER ORGANIZATION:

Introduction: Set up the paper by clearly writing your thesis statement and laying out your research questions. Prepare the reader for the discussion that will follow. You might want to consider the following questions here: Why is this a worthwhile topic? What?s led you to study this problem? How is your essay part of the study of media and conflict? How will your essay proceed?

Effective Description of the Topic: What is being struggled over? How has the conflict unfolded in the culture? In general, what does the media coverage of the topic look like? Be efficient here ? a common mistake is to spend too much time describing what?s going on and to neglect the analytical work. In other words, be efficient yet complete. You might want to try to keep your description to a paragraph or two.

Analysis & Interpretation: This is the meat and bones of your essay. Now that you have written an inviting introduction and an efficient description of the conflict, effectively apply source concepts to analytically explore the nature and function of media discourses What does your primary material (media coverage or media representations) tell us about the conflict? How do the source concepts help you read the representations of the conflict? What does this information allow you to say about the conflict?

Advocacy and Conclusion: While you have developed your voice throughout the piece as you comment on and clarify material, it is in the advocacy and conclusion section of the paper where your voice should come through the strongest. That is, here is where you answer the question, ?So what?? Now that you have identified a conflict, described its construction through the media and offered an analysis of this material, what should the reader do with this information? You may want to make suggestions for media producers in how they could more effectively cover the topic. Or, you may want to address audiences as citizens of society who could be better prepared to interpret media representations after reading your paper. However you want to handle this section is really particular to your topic and the information you present. Use this section to summarize your main points, advocate for a course of action or way of thinking that your paper is calling for and leave the reader with something to ponder.

Understanding Behavioral Research
Paper Assignment One, The research Must be within the last 10 years.

You are asked to write a 3-4 page paper comparing the popular media account of a piece of psychological research with the primary source account of that research.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

Comparison and analysis. This paper is not intended as an elaborate critique of either the media source or the primary source. Rather, I want you to think about the way the findings of the research are represented in each source.

o Describe what the language says and implies in each account, and compare what you think you can actually say on the basis of the primary research (and why) with what the popular media source says.

o This is not a good versus bad assignment. If you think the popular media account is largely accurate, that is fine. Just explain why you think so, and what got left out that might make a difference to how the research is interpreted.

Popular source. The popular media representation of the study can be derived from any lay source newspapers, magazines like Time or Newsweek, or even popular psychology books or magazines are all likely sources. If your popular source references more than one study, you are only required to compare it with one primary source.

Primary psychological source. You must compare the media description of the work with the primary source that is, with the original publication of the research. The original publication must be research that is, it must contain analyses of empirical data. It shouldnt be a journal review of other published research. Your primary source should come from psychological research published in a psychology journal or edited volume. (I would prefer that you not use psychiatric or medical research.) If you have questions about whether your source is psychological or not, feel free to ask me. Finally, since this course is focused on quantitative research, the original publication needs to be a report of quantitative research qualitative isnt appropriate for this assignment.

References and copies of sources. Your paper should be properly referenced in APA style and should include a reference page listing your sources, and submit copies of both the media source and the primary source with your paper. This means that when you turn in your paper, I should receive 3 documents the paper, and your two original sources.

This assignment asks you to provide a critical analysis of "Nurse Jackie and the politics of care" by identifying McHugh's central claims, analyzing her use of evidence and logical reasoning, and assessing the conclusion she reaches about the significance and value of this particular television representation of nursing in the context of the long history of problematic portrayals of nurses in the media that she reviews in the first part of her article.

These questions are designed to help you generate ideas to use in your analysis and response, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW THE QUESTIONS.

1. What is McHugh's topic? What audience is she addressing? (Check the publication source). What is her purpose in writing this article for her particular readers? What stance (attitude/approach) does McHugh take about her subject? (For example, does she treat her topic seriously, as a matter of significant concern to everyone, or to members of a particular group? Does she seem to have a personal engagement with her subject? Does she present both sides of an argument in a balanced manner, or does she align herself with one point of view? Does she use an objective academic tone, or is her use of language more emotional or subjective?)

2. What does she seem to assume that her readers already know or think about her topic? Do you think her assumptions are correct? Does she assume that her readers are familiar with the theory and politics of media representation that inform her analysis? Does she assume that her readers are nurses? (You might want to consider her professional status, and think about whether her academic background qualifies her to write about this particular topic for her specific audience. What challenges might she face in persuading her readers?)

3. What is McHugh's thesis (the central argument or point she is making)? Does she put forward a single argument, several different arguments, or an argument with several aspects? Does her argument seem valid and coherent? Are there any internal contradictions or logical reasoning errors? Do you note any examples of gaps in her reasoning, or any logical fallacies (ad hominem attack, slippery slope, red herring, etc.)? Does her analysis seem fair, balanced, and accurate? Does it seem well-informed and carefully researched? Do her arguments establish her conclusion? Does she support her claims with evidence and examples? Does she use evidence that is relevant and recent?

4. How does she approach writing about her topic? How is the article organized and sub-divided? (Check for sub-headings, transitions between claims, and other indications of organization and structure.) Do you find this structure logical and sound? Does the article seem to put forward a coherent analysis, or would it be more effective if it was structured in a different manner?

5. How does McHugh use diction (word choices) and other aspects of language, such as tone? Does this article reflect the conventions of academic writing?

6.How does McHugh use rhetorical modes (patterns) of development, such as narration, description, chronology, cause-and-effect reasoning, comparison/contrast, or definition? Are these patterns used effectively to support her analysis and argument?

7. Does McHugh aim to persuade her readers through the use of logical reasoning? By appeals to their ethical or shared professional values? By provoking their emotional responses? (In a rhetorical analysis these are called, respectively, logos, ethos, and pathos. All can be valid strategies, but academic writing is typically most dependent on logos (logical reasoning) to make a case.)

Organizing and Writing the Analysis

Your critical analysis should be written in the form an essay, with an introduction, coherent and unified body paragraphs (including topic sentences and logical transitions between paragraphs), and a conclusion.

Your introduction will need a thesis: your concise assessment of how effectively McHugh supports her argument with logical reasoning and evidence. Include some attention to her rhetorical situation: her purpose in writing this article and her intended audience (readers).

In your second paragraph you should provide a succinct summary of McHugh's central claims: what are her arguments, and how does she formulate them? Your subsequent paragraphs should provide an analysis of the validity of her arguments that evaluates strengths and checks for gaps in logical reasoning, unsupported assertions, and/or logical fallacies. Is this a persuasive argument for her particular readers? Consider how her argument is structured and organized: do her claims build upon one another? Is her use of evidence appropriate for her topic and approach? Think about whether there are any biases that need to be considered.

Your concluding paragraph should sum up your overall impression of the article's strengths in logic and argument; if you have criticisms, you could note how the article could be improved in one or more ways. Your conclusion can also incorporate your own personal response to the article and, more broadly, to McHugh's topic. Do you think this is a significant subject for nursing professionals? Does McHugh's analysis align with your own views? Are there aspects of this topic that she neglected to analyze that you think are important? Do you think that television representations of nurses have an impact on how nurses are viewed by the public and by other health care professionals?

Social Science Theory and Methodology - The graduate
examines the distinctive characteristics and forms of social scientific inquiry; recognizes
various behavioral, cognitive, and social phenomena; and applies social science theories and
methods to evaluate and explain phenomena.
Introduction:
What does it mean to think in a social scientific way? In part, social science draws on
methods of observation and experimentation utilized in the physical and natural sciences.
But social scientists deal with human behavior and social institutions, which are not easily
placed in the controlled environment associated with scientific investigation. Social scientists
must be prepared to adapt their methods frequently, and they must ask questions that can
evolve along with their investigations of social phenomena.
In this summative assessment, you will formulate a significant social scientific question
about human psychological development, personality, social interaction, social identity,
social classes, or the psychology of group behavior. Your formulation of this question should
be based on your reading from Perry and Perry, Contemporary Society, or from another
source. Examples of questions that you might examine include the following: How does the
mass media influence perceptions of gender? How can family size influence the process of
socialization?
You will begin this assessment by formulating your social scientific question and explaining
why it is a significant one for analysis. Consider how life for individuals, groups, or society
would be affected if the answer to your question were known. Remember that the question
you ask must be something that can be examined methodically and systematically. It must
be a question that does not have an immediately evident answer.
Based on your reading of Contemporary Society, you will then provide a detailed discussion
of three specific research method problems that a social scientist would need to address in
order to answer your larger formulated question. A research method problem is a problem
(or subordinate question) that must be investigated in order to provide information
necessary to answer the overarching question that you have formulated. For example, if
you formulated the question How does the mass media influence perceptions of gender?
one research problem (i.e., subordinate question) might be, What methods (e.g.,
interviews, opinion polls, etc.) should be used to gather data on individual reactions to
media representations of gender?
In the second half of your assessment, you will consider the extent to which your
formulated question can or should be answered by applying the scientific method. Does the
scientific method provide a complete framework for investigating the three research
problems that you have identified? For information on the scientific method and the social
sciences, see pages 5??"9 of Contemporary Society.
You will conclude with a well-reasoned response to the following question: To what extent
does a social scientific perspective rely on methods drawn from the physical and natural
sciences?
Task:
A. Analyze a selected topic from a social scientific perspective by doing the following
(suggested length of 5??"7 pages):
1. Explain the significance of a suitable question, which you have formulated, for social
scientific analysis.
2. Analyze three research problems (i.e., subordinate questions) that will help answer
the social scientific question that you have formulated.
a. Explain the social scientific analysis required for each of the three research
problems.
3. Consider the extent to which your chosen topic question can be examined by the
application of the scientific method by doing the following:
a. Discuss the scientific method as understood in the natural or physical sciences.
b. Compare the research methods required for your formulated question (from part
A2a) to the scientific method as understood in the natural or physical sciences
(from part A3a).
c. Discuss whether a social science perspective must rely on the scientific method in
the same way that natural or physical science would.
B. Include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
Note: Please save word-processing documents as *.rtf (Rich Text Format) or *.pdf (Portable
Document Format) files.
Note: When bulleted points are present in the task prompt, the level of detail or support
called for in the rubric refers to those bulleted points.
Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the Rubric Terms web link
included in the Evaluation Procedures section.
Note: When using outside sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the
submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list
for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted
if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.
Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or
closely paraphrased from outside sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA
style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the APA Guidelines section.
Reference List:
Note: This reference list refers only to direct citations in the task above and may be
different from those you need to complete the task. Consult your Course of Study for a list
of suggested learning resources.

Male (identifying) students should address the following questions:

According to our culture, what is the definition of femininity? Where do women learn what it means to be a woman in our culture? Why is sexuality used so often in advertising? How do you think popular media representations affect womens self esteem?

ALL STUDENTS should do the following:

Address the following questions: What is meant by the term heteronormativity? How might heteronormativity be linked to homophobia?

Your paper must use standard formatting and it must be in an essay/narrative format. While you may use sub-headings (and I recommend that you do), your paper should not be a series of lists. Instead, your paper should have an opening introduction, a main body, and a conclusion.

WORD LIMIT: 2000 words

OBJECTIVE: to demonstrate your understanding of Discourse Analysis and apply it meaningfully to print media texts

TASK: A Discourse Analysis of print media representations of a politician, celebrity or event who/which has had significant media exposure during 2004.
Be clear in your own mind that you are analysing the media representations of the person or event. You are not conducting an analysis of the actual individual and their actions or words or the actual event.

Using the approach of Discourse Analysis, analyse the way the print media has represented your chosen politician or celebrity, or event in recent (2004) Australian newspapers or news magazines.

Analyse between three and five texts. Texts must have been published during 2004. Choose your texts from either newspapers, news magazines or both.
Newspapers can be local, interstate or national; magazines may be international, national or local. The texts do not have to be from the same newspaper or news magazine. Texts must use English language. They should not be fiction. You could choose to do either a diachronic (over time) or synchronic analysis (snap shot in time).

Remember, this is a micro-analysis of the language and should not, therefore, include the visual components of any of your texts.

You must contextualise your Discourse Analysis. Consider the impact of the medium of the texts and consider the socio-historical context in which your public figure or event is situated in your texts. This is a research assignment, you will be expected to read widely. Use library catalogue and databases to find supporting material in books and journal articles on examples of Discourse Analysis and background information on media and media representations. You are expected to refer to at least six extra references.

The assignment should be presented as an essay, with an introduction, analysis, discussion and conclusion (there is no need to label these sections). All texts analysed should be photocopied and attached to the assignment as appendices. You must include a bibliography (List of Works Consulted). Use MLA style.

MARKING CRITERIA
Your work will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
1. Your understanding of Discourse Analysis as presented in the lectures, the readings and the tutorials.
2. Your ability to use Discourse Analysis meaningfully in the discussion of your texts.
3. The extent to which your work demonstrates your understanding of the forms of print media.
4. The appropriateness of your readings and your ability to incorporate research findings into your essay.
5. The standard of writing style, essay structure and general presentation.

SOME MORE TIPS:

Essay should be attempted around:

40% Introduction, what is discourse analysis, method, introduction of data

50% Analysis

10% Discussion

Only choose one Discourse method to then guide the analysis. i.e. Fairclough or Van Dyke or Fitzgerald, etc?

Analyse a variety of things such as
 Headlines
 Opening paragraphs
 How many writers of the text and do they mention position. i.e. political reporter, chief economic reporter, etc.
 Language used
 And visuals ? but do not analyse the picture itself but rather size, where it is placed in relation to text etc
 Where the text is, i.e. front page, page 3 etc and how this effects ideology
 Captions
 Tabloid/ respected paper ? context of where the text is placed
 News values triangle
 What is happening at the time

I know this is a long list, if this is too many to keep to the word limit by all means only select a few to analyse.

Journals where research may be found include:

 Discourse and Society
 Media, Culture and Society
 Language and Society
 Critical Discourse Analysis

I HAVE FAXED THREE ARTICLES (6 PAGES IN TOTAL) OF THE PHOTOCOPIED TEXT TO WEST COAST 213 ? 291 ? 2157. I have included my name and order to the fax so I hope it reaches if not please email to let me know if you have not received them.

THESE ARE THE TEXTS TO BE ANALYSED.

[Annotated Bibliography]

Topic: In American science fiction stories, the construction of fictional aliens is directly related to legal, political, and cultural definitions of "illegal aliens."

Said, Edward W. The politics of Dispossesion: The Struggle for Palestinian Determination 1969-1994. New york: Random, 1994.

In this essay, Said examines the ways in which Palestinians are represented in various discourses in the United States. The essay begins with an assertion that, even as far back as the Puritan colonization of the "New World," there has been an ideological mission in dominant American culture to incorporate diverse cultures located within the geographical boundaries of the United States into a single, distinctly "American: identity. Today, Said sees a relationship between politics and media representations that produces a consensus that is not strictly the ideology of a particalar class, but rather sets limits on what can and cannot be expressed in contemporary America. Said then goes on to explain how American media constructs a fictional concept of the "Arab" by representing the MiddleEast as exotic, primitive, and decidedly "un-American"

Said's essay provides me with a very useful theoretical model of the ways in which "aliens" are constructed in political and media representations. Much of his argument is based on Foucault's discussions of discursive practices and the fuction of power in Western society, but Said has a much more positive view of the ability to disrupt discursive practices and challenge existing systems of power. Unlike other authors I've read, Said does not adopt the position that ideology is purely the product of the dominant class, but rather that it is an intricate network of practices that operate within a culture. His discussion of specific media images of Arabs is similar to my intended project, particularly my research into the relationship between fictional aliens and the cultural paranoia concerning immigration in the United States.
