Now that you have given some thought concerning the origins of racism and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, in essay two, you will be required to research (using mostly primary sources) the Obama Administration and its platform on immigration, legal and otherwise. However, any presidential administration has to work with Congress, and often there are major disputes and disagreements. What counter argument can you find that most disagrees with that of the Obama Administration and their ideas about immigrants? Once you determine the nature and policies of the President?s stance on immigration and those who would disagree with him, you should report both sides of the argument in a three to four page essay.

Now it is apparent that this topic could become unmanageable if you do not limit your research to only one or two arguments between the President and those who would disagree with his policies. It is also important for you to note that you will be learning at levels three and four of Bloom?s Taxonomy (the levels of applying and analyzing). Once you do your research and proper documentation, you will need to assess if either side has any points worth implementation for the betterment of the country. In other words, you will apply ideas researched and analyze them in light of what you think is workable.

Question: It appears that U.S. Middle East foreign policy is going to take yet another tactical turn in the war on terror with the recent regime change in Washington. The Obama Administration is at least rhetorically signaling that they will scale down Iraq, in favor of redeploying thousands of U.S. troops to Afghanistan, which by all measures is still smoldering (and possibly re-igniting) from the 2001 U.S. invasion and removal of the Taliban in Kabul. To the extent the campaign promises become a reality, use the 9 theories we have discussed in the first part of the semester to explain the continuing conflict in Afghanistan.

As we embark on examining the presidency consider the following question. President Obama has increased the use of predator drones in lieu of putting "boots on the ground." In a controversial move, the Obama Administration killed suspected al-Qaeda member Anwar al-Awaki in 2011. al-Awaki had been accused of being a pivotal organizer in several terrorist plots, and was identified as a key al-Qaeda leader. The al-Awaki case, however includes a complicated set of factors, primary among them is that he was a US citizen before his death. Accordingly, al-Awaki as a citizen has due process rights granted to him by the Constitution. Due process includes the right to a trial before an impartial judge and jury and access to a lawyer. al-Awaki was not provided these rights before the attack in Yemen that killed him.

Did President Obama have the right to authorize the execution of al-Awaki without a court trial? If you believe President Obama does have this power, why? Think about what this type of assassination opens the door to -- does this mean the president can kill American citizens using the global war on terror as justification? If you believe he did not have the power, why? Is this an example of an egregious over reach of executive power?

Use LA time, NY TImes, Wallstreet Journal, Washington Post articles as evidence to support your argument.

Question: Was it right for the Obama administration to release government memos revealing U.S. interrogation techniques?

The essay should consist of premises which support your conclusion, and it should also contain some mix of counter-argument, concession, and refutation. Attach articles to your essay that appear on your Works Cited list.

This is a Research Proposal for an MA Thesis, and Comparative Research or Case Study Research is the preferred Methodology (or the best Methodology that will get me from my research question to my expected findings)!

The Research question is: "How will the change of U.S. president impact U.S. foreign policy decisions and approach, and can a change in style over substance reverse the decline of U.S. power and influence?" The research Looks specifically at the foreign polices of George W. Bush and Barack Obama in their first two (2) years in office. (G.W. Bush: 2001-2003 and B. Obama: 2009-2011).

1) Describe and evaluate the factual theoretical circumstances which led to a major U.S. foreign policy or policy doctrine, a broad foreign policy doctrine, with a lesser-included policy supporting the broader doctrine; and 2) describe and assess the consequence of that policy or doctrine.

The subjects of the Case Study will be the Foreign policies or doctrine of the Bush Administration (2001-2003) and Obama Administration (2009-2011), and the Methodology section should not only explain the case, but should also test a theory, in this case, Perpetual War Theory.

The Case Study should evaluate the theory, and assess whether it is confirmed (or falsified) by the results of the policy itself, by other evidence that has emerged since the policy was adopted, by evidence that policymakers had access to at the time, and finally, by data you have organized in the Methodology section. State your method of evaluating the circumstances you assess, and explain how you are going about your organization.

The general format should follow that of a science experiment, and should include any applicable tables and graphs to reflect any quantitative data that you have gathered. First frame the theory or explanation, then look for observable phenomena predicted by the theory. You should take four (4) specific steps:

1) Frame your theory or explanation;
2) Infer predictions from the theory about how the case should unfold if the theory were valid (or if the theory explained the case), and how it should unfold if the theory were false (or could not explain the case);
3) Examine the case, looking for congruence or incongruence between prediction and evidence; and
4) Interpret the results.

discussion:
compare and contrast how President Obama makes use of both mainstream and "alternative" news sources. Explain how he does this and why? Of the two types of media, which would you say is he most effectively using and why? (Be sure to substantiate what you write with evidence.) Would you say that his use of the media is negatively or positively impacting his term as President so far.

Then, you should go on to research interest groups in order to find one (1) that has had a direct impact on the Obama Administration's efforts so far or has attempted to impact the Obama Administration. Explain the background and goals of the group and how they have had an impact on the Obama Administration. Be sure to offer citations in order to show evidence of your findings.

The focus should be solely on the Bush and the Obama administrations? policies toward the program and the similarities and differences between the two policies.
The paper, which is worth 150 points, should be double-spaced--with a standard (Times New Roman) 12 pt. font--, written in complete sentences with no bullets or outlines, and free of grammatical/spelling errors. Four (4) points will be deducted for such errors beyond 2. The paper must be prepared in accordance with the APA (6th edition) style for scholarly manuscripts (see the APA links below)

Basically there are three parts to the essay, each part needs to be 250 words... with one reference for each section.

Would young students benefit? Or should they get some life experience before taking the class?"

(2)"During recent weeks, there have been multiple reports that gun sales have increased nationwide by as much as 30% per month. All of the reports have stated that the N.R.A. (National Rife Association) has run advertisements suggesting to its members that the Obama administration will initiate further gun control legislation, if not now, then in a second term.

State your reaction to this phenomenon, whether positive or negative, and give the EVIDENCE for your critical analysis. (Be sure to consider the types of evidence as outlined in our lecture and in the textbook to support your position). Pretend that you were a typical 20-year-old Japanese-American in 1942. Describe the circumstances in which you lived at that time. What is your response to the American army's request that you serve in the armed forces of the United States? Why?

I wrote:
1)Being a 20 year old Japanese American in 1942 was profound. In the first month of the year I would be living a life in a city on the West Coast iwth my family where my father would own his own deli in the space below my apartment. One day in February in 1942, president Roosevelt issued the Executive Order 9066making the American military to force all of my family and friends who were also Japanese- Americans into internment camps. My father would be forced to sell his very successful deli as well as give up all of our belongings. All the family heirlooms would be the hardest to give up. We did not fight going into the camps because we knew the consequences would be severe if we resisted the military. Soon, some would be allowed to be released to go to college, work in factories and some to serve in the United States military. My brother would serve in the military so he could provide for our family when we were released. The camps would be uncomfortable and it would be hard being uprooted from everything I knew.

2)My response to such a request might have been a ready and enthusiastic 'yes' prior to December 7, 1941. The day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour changed that for me. Now I have mixed feelings--I want to fight for America, my country of birth but the enemy is the country of my parents and ancestors. Given the anti-Japanese sentiment in the country after that attack, I am afraid of the anger and resentment I might possibly encounter as I serve with other American soldiers who consider themselves more "American" than myself.
The enemy speaks my language, looks like me and shares my culture and customs but that is where any similiarity between us ends. My parents have been 'relocated' to a remote camp in the California desert, may never reclaim their home and belongings but would never forsake this, their adopted country. I want to volunteer to serve the country I now belong to. I've heard the the Japanese units already serving have outstanding records in combat thus far and I would like to join them in that distinction. I want to prove that I am a loyal American and no one is going to impugn my loyalty to America. This country has been good to my family and so I will heed the call to serve, despite resentment at having my honor, loyalty and character questioned.

Martin Luther King, Jr., observed that President Johnson's desire to end poverty and provide economic opportunity for all Americans was "shot down on the battlefields of Vietnam." Do you agree with King's statement? Why or why not?

I wrote:
No I do not entirely agree with King?s statement. He is reaching to make a connection between the conditions here, which no one claims were ideal, and the war in Vietnam. Yes, we all can espouse Christian ideals but at the same time we have to look at the actions of the enemy, in this case North Vietnam supported by Communist China, which had (and has) no regard for human rights.

We must also look at the fact that we were not the primary or original agressor in Vietnam. Although the subject is complex, North Vietnam wanted to exert a totalitarian form of government over what was effectively a separate country which had a valid and legitimate government. If we accept Christian ideals as King claims to, we should support the true freedom of ALL men. Certainly North Vietnam did not espouse individual freedom in any way, shape or form. Just as King says his calling takes him beyond national allegiances? (BV, par 15) so too, did America?s calling in protecting the freedoms of ALL people--which is the highest calling of a Christlike nature.

King says, ?I could not be silent in the face of such cruel manipulation of the poor? (BV, par 10). What is often forgotten is that the US had a treaty responsibility through SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization), much like today's NATO wherein we have a legal and moral obligation to defend an attack on any of the organization members just as we would defend England or Italy today. I do not see that as cruel manipulation of the poor in America. In spite of what some people would call King's good intentions, his attempt to connect two subjects was not ethically or morally fair.

As for Lyndon Johnson, he intiated and got passed some of the most extensive civil rights legislation this country had ever seen.

New topic:

offer a substantive comment on Dr. Cornel West's analysis of the King legacy and the Obama administration.

I wrote:
I agree with Dr Cornel West who echoes King that one will not learn how to love others if they do not start in their own family, neighborhoods, and synagogues (West on King 1). I also agree that the Obama administration has not done a good job and has used funds improperly to bail out a variety of companies that were ?too big to fail? (West on King 2). However, his assessment fails to take into account the massive damages to everyone regardless of color, that the failure of AIG could have caused to the American people. There was a valid reason to prevent the failure of AIG as distasteful at it was, and the same does not apply to bailing out a segment of society simply because Dr West sees them as under privileged.

To some extent, I agree with Dr Cornel West?s assessment that President Obama has done little specifically for the African American community. Dr West in part echoes a common cry?the cry of victimhood. He emphasizes that the government has not ?come through? with opportunities for ?Jamal and Leticia? (West on King 2). Why is it the government?s responsibility to come with opportunities for Jamal or Leticia or myself, Tanya single mother?

In these neighborhoods where bullets are flying, as West says, it?s black on black crime chiefly among those who have failed to avail themselves of any substantive education. A common retort in these areas and this is according to Bill Cosby and other high profile ?black leaders?, that it is a sell out to ?speak and be like whitey?. So it may not necessarily be the genius?s who overcome but rather many fail to excel beyond their circumstances due to this attitude. Many choose not to participate in education and then complain that they can?t get a job. How do you create jobs out of thin air? Equal opportunity as espoused by Dr King, is not the same as ensuring equal results regardless of skill, talent or determination.

On Sunday, March 7, Iraq will conduct its second national election since the U.S. lead invasion toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in 2003. Many observers speculate this election will not only determine the future of Iraq, but it could also dramatically change the present United States ??" Iraqi relationship regarding issues ranging from the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq to Iraqs growing preeminence in the region. However the outcome, this election will force both the United States and Iraqi governments to make some hard decisions about their respective futures.

In preparation for the elections aftermath, you have been tasked to draft a strategy paper incorporating three of the scenarios presented below. The three scenarios listed are considered possible challenges to the USGs continued commitment to Iraq. Any of these scenarios could easily change our relationship with Iraq, militarily or otherwise. As such, your paper must address not only the potential implications of specific scenarios to the U.S. military, but also their impact on all facets of the United states Government (USG) as well.

1. If post-election violence surges, will the Obama Administration continue its present schedule regarding the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq?

2. What USG agencies will continue to play a vital role in Iraq? How do you envision the Department of State, Central Intelligence Agency, United States Agency for International Development, Department of Justice, and others supporting USG interests in Iraq? At what point does Iraqi sovereignty become an issue regarding continuing USG interagency involvement in Iraq?

3. If post-elections violence surges, will the Iraq government allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq past the previously agreed dates of departure?

The seminar will examine the decreasing role of government appears to play in low income and poverty housing development in the United States. The seminar will address how these changes can affect the development and design of low income and public housing.

The moves toward decentralization that have a marked a major shift in U.S. housing policy since the middle 1990's have manifest quite literal changes in architectural and urban design. However, the tendency to see these social and political shifts in light of building form or urban planning design has limited the analysis, and wider conversation about the pitfalls and broader opportunities / implications at the core of these economic and political shifts. Our goal is re-connect the architecture and planning practices by asking students from both disciplines to address how design, policy and development practices can be expected to affect the low income constituencies they serve.

This course will present material on the development of public as well as low income and affordable housing. Capital markets, knowledge of zoning, general real estate transactional concepts, contract and tax law, are examples of material that will be covered. This course will provide students with an introduction to core concepts needed for eventual employment by CDC's and other development organizations with a mission to create affordable housing.

Course Work: Students will be asked to form teams to prepare analysis of factors involved in the redevelopment of development public housing sites and in particular to focus on the potentials of the new Obama Administration economic stimulus package as it will apply to housing. Details on this work will be coordinated in studio.

4. Your Courses of Action should show how the Instruments of National Power (IOP) (Diplomatic, Informational, Military, or Economic) would be employed (the How, limit your discussion to the most important one or two IOPs per COA).

5. Your Courses of Action should be something the President can implement. (i.e. show how he will enforce, enact, encourage, and/or recommend your courses of action for implementation in the National Decision Making Process, the Who)

6. Include an analysis/discussion of the issues for the entire region of the Middle East and any neighboring relations in the context of the OpEds issues. (How would your courses of action affect other countries in the region? What about neighboring countries? the Where)

7. The essay should be a focused analysis using relevant concepts and specific examples from the provided course material (no other material is allowed) to support your Courses of Action.

Specifics:
1. 13 page - double-space, single-sided, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman 12 point font.

2. Use at least 17 course material references. At least 10 should be separate/different.

3. For course material references, include bracketed authors name and page number at the end of the statement [Brown, pg 167].

4. Include a reference page at the end of the essay (not to be counted as part of your essay for page count/length). The reference for course material should identify the author, lesson, reading number, and page number. Example:

Brown, L. Lesson 3, Reading 5 of 8.
Brown, Lestor R., The New Geopolitics of Food, Foreign Policy, 2011, 167, pps. 166 to 172.

5. Please DO NOT use direct quotations like you did in the first assignment.

6. In the intro, please tell me what the essay is going to talk about and highlight the Courses of Action and the key points to read for throughout the document?

7. Please take a position and made a statement. Please use words like compare, analyze, evaluate, show, prove; and then follow through in the essay to accomplish just that. Avoid words like discuss or consider.

8. In the conclusion, recap the major points (the Courses of Action and the Who, What, When, Where, and Hows) and a re-statement of your thesis, having been proved or defended.

Helping Arab Democrats
By Wall Street Journal
The U.S. has a chance to aid pro-American reformers in Tunisia.
The Obama Administrations response to the past years Middle East convulsions wont make any Best of American Foreign Policy lists. It was slow to recognize popular uprisings against authoritarian rulers and reluctant to lead. Which makes Thursdays decision to give Tunisias new government a helping hand notable and welcome.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that the Administration wants to give Tunisia $100 million this year. This isnt a standard assistance package that funds U.S. consultants, but a direct injection of cash into the governments coffers. The U.S. would also set aside $30 million to guarantee Tunisian government bonds, which will ease its access to international capital markets.
In tight fiscal times, Congress is rightly skeptical about foreign aid and would need to sign off. But this is an easy call.
Tunisia matters beyond its size. The so-called Arab Spring started in this North African state of 10 million in December 2010, after a fruit vendor set himself on fire to protest unaccountable government. The next month, Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali was the first Arab dictator forced out of power; rulers in Egypt, Libya and Yemen followed.
Tunisias post-revolutionary experience is exceptional. While Libya and Syria descended into civil war, and Egypt was misruled by the military and saw radical Islamists empowered in the last year, Tunisias path has been smoother. In October elections, the Islamist Nahda party won the most votes, but other groups did well too.
Nahda formed a broad coalition government, pledged to honor Tunisias secular traditions, and reached out to the U.S. The Muslim Brotherhood, the dominant force in Egypt after recent elections, has done none of these things. Nahda has kept its word, announcing this week that the new constitution wouldnt mention Islamic law, or Shariah, as a source of legislation.
During Mrs. Clintons visit to Tunis last month, Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali told her that Tunisia wanted a close, strategic relationship with the U.S. By coming through yesterday, Mrs. Clinton has shown Tunisians??"and people across the Arab world??"that the U.S. helps its friends.
While the political transition has gone well, Tunisias economic problems have deepened. The tourism industry has shrunk by a third, driving down economic growth (by 1.8%) and raising joblessness. Investment and visitors remain wary, though economic growth has started to revive. The U.S. aid would cover urgent needs and encourage economic reform. Americas support might prod the dilatory European Union and oil-rich Arab states to pitch in as well. Tunis is seeking $1 billion in outside support this year.
With its good public works and a skilled work force, Tunisia wont need handouts indefinitely. Longer-term relationships will be built on trade and investment. In his speech on the Middle East last May, President Obama promised to pursue bilateral free trade agreements with the regions budding democracies, but he then dropped the subject.
The Administration could revive the idea by striking a trade deal with the easiest case first, Tunisia. Heres another idea: Designate Tunisia a strategic and economic partner, as the U.S. did with Georgia and similarly strategic countries.
Todays Tunisia offers an antidote to the pessimism about the Arab world. With American help, it has a chance to show the rest of the Middle East that political pluralism can result in new prosperity.

War on Terror in Afghanistan
PAGES 8 WORDS 2878

Question: It appears that U.S. Middle East foreign policy is going to take yet
another tactical turn in the war on terror with the recent regime change in
Washington. The Obama Administration is at least rhetorically signaling that they
will scale down Iraq, in favor of redeploying thousands of U.S. troops to
Afghanistan, which by all measures is still smoldering (and possibly re-igniting)
from the 2001 U.S. invasion and removal of the Taliban in Kabul. To the extent
the campaign promises become a reality, use the 9 theories we have discussed in
the first part of the semester to explain the continuing conflict in Afghanistan.

Sample Outline
(But feel free to design your outline any way you wish)

I. Introduction / Thesis Statement a brief statement outlining your position or
something relevant about this issue.

II. Body the bulk of the paper is here, in data taken from the readings and other
evidence you have found in support of your position.

b. American response or provocation? supporting the Mujahadeen
c. Soviet withdrawal 1989
d. Rise of the Taliban (1994 2001)

2. September 11, 2001 and the American invasion

3. Theoretical construct
a. Levels of analysis
