C. Feasibility Analysis
Q1: To determine the likelihood of success implementing the ideas developed in Section B above, you?ll need to conduct a Force Field Analysis. This method lists, discusses, and evaluates the various forces for and against a proposed change. When a change is planned, Force Field Analysis helps you look at the big picture by analyzing all of the forces impacting the change and weighing the pros and cons.

? The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, by Peter M. Senge
The author identified seven learning disabilities that may be fatal to an organization. He noted that firms that are learners will succeed in the competitive global market. Further, he identified five disciplines for a learning organization: personal mastering (personal learning and growth), mental models (internal images of how the world works), shared vision (a sense of purpose that provides energy and focus for learning), team learning (alignment where teams function as a unit with focused and harmonized energies), and system thinking (viewing organization from system's perspective). The author outlined the laws of the Fifth Discipline.
?
Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, by Michael E. Porter
The author maintained that a firm in an industry creates competitive advantage over its competitors by providing more value for customers than their competitors. The possible competitive advantages are based on costs, differentiation and technology.
Competitive Advantage through Low Cost
A firm is considered to have a cost-based competitive advantage if the total costs of all its products are lower than any competitor. Factors that are generally under control are: Economics or diseconomies of scale, learning, capacity utilization, linkages within the value chain, interrelationships between business units, integration, timing, policies, location and institutional factors.
Competitive Advantage through Differentiation
Differentiation occurs when a firm creates a unique product for which buyers are willing to pay premium in excess of the extra costs incurred by the firm. The differentiation-based competitive advantage can be sustainable if the competitors do not imitate the uniqueness of the product and the buyers' need and perceptions remain stable or high.
Competitive Advantage through Technology
A firm can achieve low cost or differentiation through technology or technological improvements. If competitors are unable to meet the technological challenge, this could be a source of sustainable competitive advantage .
?
The One Thing You Need to Know about Great Managing, Great Leading, and Sustained Individual Success, by Marcus Buckingham.
In this reading, the author contends that greatness is not accomplished by avoiding what causes failure, but rather by following a distinct set of behaviors. He believes that the controlling insight for managers is to capitalize the concept of uniqueness. To do this, managers should: select the right people, define clear behavioral expectations, motivate and shape employee behavior using praise, and demonstrate care and concern for employees.
He also espouses to be a successful leader, one must begin with a vision. Furthermore, sustaining individual success requires using the talents that are found to be the most rewarding and fulfilling, over a long period of time.
?
Big Winners and Big Losers: The 4 Secrets of Long-Term Business Success and Failure, by Alfred Marcus
The author identified big winners and losers from Wall Street Journal's scorecard on the basis of stock market returns from 1992 to 2002. He noted that over 500 experienced managers participated in the effort to identify what differentiated the big winners from the big losers. Knowledge of customer's needs was considered essential for the success of the big winners. Common traits shared by the winners were Agility, Discipline and focus.

Diffuseness- Ineffectiveness in building competitive advantage because of lack While Safeco Insurance moved from a loser's position to a winner's position because of embracing focus, cutting back on acquisition and divesting non-core business, manufacturer SPX, a winner, became a loser by losing its strategic direction and spreading too thin.
?
Beyond Teams: Building the Collaborative Organization, by Michael Beyerlein, Sue Freedman, Craig McGee, and Linda Moran.
The authors of this reading espouse the use of "Collaborative Work Systems" which provide the fundamental principles for organizations to be flexible, adaptable, and competitive. Their 10 principles include:

He elaborates upon various principles, including commitment, adaptability, and forecasting. He believes that the use of "scenarios" are the hallmark of a flexible organizational strategy. These scenarios can be created by: asking the right questions, identifying the dimensions of uncertainty, determining the limits of uncertainty, determining the final scenario set, and determining relative probabilities.
?

They view their employees as essential in providing solution to competitive challenges. Broad-based layoff is considered only as a last resort. Examples of companies that utilize this approach are; Southwest Airlines, Cisco, Procter & Gamble and 3M.

Background:
In this case assignment, you are asked to discuss and analyze the factors for success and failure in business ventures.

To do this we will look at two different companies that started more or less at about the same time, Siebel and eBay. They both did extremely well initially, with Siebel revolutionizing CRM and eBay the auction business. However, both went very different ways. Siebel developed major problems and was acquired by Oracle, while eBay grew to where it is today?the leader in its marketspace.

Required Reading:
Refer to the required and optional readings on entrepreneurship, the theme for this module. These articles will give you an understanding of the factors that contribute to the success or failure of a start-up company. Pay careful attention to the important lessons from these two start-ups, eBay (very successful) and Siebel (not so successful). Note too the exit strategies that both companies use?eBay's exit strategy was via IPO (initial public offering - stock market), and Siebel was through acquisition. These will come into play in future assignments.

Assignment:
Write a paper which examines the following questions:
?What are the critical factors that determine the success or failure of a start-up company?
?Analyze why the two companies in this module, Siebel Systems and eBay, differ so much in their outlook.
?Identify some of the important lessons you derive from comparing companies that continue to do well with others that flounder after being successful start-ups. Among the lessons you identify, which one is the most important?
?Assess the key start-up factors that determine long-term sustainability of a company such as eBay or Siebel.

Keys to the Assignment:
The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper are:
?Detailing the various factors contributing to the success (or failure) of start-ups.
?Evaluating these factors in reference to eBay and Siebel, (i.e., what they did right, what they did wrong).
?Evaluating these two organizations in terms of the key startup factors that determine long-term sustainability.

Assignment Expectations:
Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven points:
?Precision - Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?
?Breadth - Is the full breadth of the subject, that is, all the keys to the assignment, addressed?
?Depth - Does the paper address all elements of the topic in sufficient depth? Does it include and apply the background readings and other background resources as references?
?Critical thinking ? Are the concepts of this module applied accurately, logically, and relevantly?
?Organization - Is the paper organized in a coherent and systematic manner? Are headings included in all papers longer than two pages?
?Clarity - Is the writing clear and are the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the questions, or are points conveyed through excessive use of quotations?
?Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate? Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?

Hello,

I am taking a master's level research methods class this semester. The purpose of this class is for students to write a mock thesis by the end of the class. I am an education major, and my research topic is: The perceived effectiveness of college programs for non-traditional students by recent graduates. I need your help in writing a 4 page paper containing a Working Hypothesis / Research Objectives for my research in non-traditional college students. I am looking at what colleges are doing to meet the needs of these students, and whether they are succeeding.

Assignment Instructions from my professor: In research, we need parameters to guide the focus of the study. You will develop a problem statement (try to make it succinct??"1 sentence will work), research hypotheses or questions and objectives, and preliminary information about your proposed study and its respondents. Begin to also frame the study with an introduction or overview of the literature. Writing requirement: 4 pages, double-spaced.

Background on my research problem thus far: I intend to study the perceived effectiveness of current education programs in delivering what they had promised to non-traditional students. In order to accomplish this, I will mail a questionnaire survey to a random sample of non-traditional graduates from the University of Arkansas within the past 5 years. The results of this survey will then be analyzed to determine areas of student dissatisfaction, as well as to highlight the areas of adult education that are currently succeeding.

Here are a few literature links on the topic of non-traditional students that might be helpful for this Working Hypothesis / Research Objectives assingment:

Kmart case study

On January 22, 2002, Kmart Corporation became the largest retailer in U.S. history to seek bankruptcy protection. In Kmarts petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, Kmart management announced that they would outline a plan for repaying Kmarts creditors, reducing Kmarts size, and restructuring its business so that it could leave court protection as a viable competitor in discount mass-market retailing. Emerging from bankruptcy in May 2003, Kmart still lacked a business strategy to succeed in an extremely competitive marketplace.
By 2004, the discount department store industry had reached maturity, and Kmart no longer possessed a clearly defined position within that industry. Its primary competitors were Wal-Mart, Sears, Target, Kohls and JCPenney, with secondary competitors in certain categories. Wal-Mart, an extremely efficient retailer, was known for consistently having the lowest costs (reflected in lower prices) and the highest sales in the industry. Having started in rural America, Wal-Mart was now actively growing internationally. Sears, with the second-highest annual sales, had a strong position in hard goods, such as home appliances and tools. Around 40% of all major home appliance sales continued to be controlled by Sears. Nevertheless, Sears was struggling with slumping sales as customers turned from Sears mall stores to stand-alone, big-box retailers, such as Lowes and Home Depot, to busy their hard goods. Target, third in sales but second in profits, behind Wal-Mart, had distinguished itself as a merchandiser of stylish upscale products. Along with Wal-Mart, Target had flourished to such an extent that Dayton-Dudson, its parent company had changed its corporate name to Target, Kohls, a relatively new entrant to the industry, operated 420 family oriented stores in 32 states. JCPenney operated more than 1,000 stores in all 50 states. Both Kohls and JCPenney emphasized soft goods, such as clothing and related items.
Kmart was also challenged by category killers that competed in only one of or a few industry categories but in greater depth within any category than could any department store. Some of these were Toys R Us, Home Depot, Lowes, and drug stores such as Rite Aid, VS, Eckerd, and Walgreens.
Kmart had been established in 1962 by its parent company S.S. Kresge as a discount department store offering the most variety of goods at the lowers prices. Unlike Sears, the company chose not to locate in shopping centers but to establish its discount stores in highly visible corner locations, During the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Kmart prospered. By 1990, however, when Wal-Mart first surpassed Kmart in annual sales, Kmarts stores had become dated and lost their appeal. Other well-known discount stores, such as Korvettes, Grants, Woolco, Ames, Bradlees, and Montgomery Ward, had gone out of business as the industry had consolidated and reached maturity. Attempting to avoid this fate, Kmart management updated and enlarged the stores, added name brands, and hired Martha Stewart as its lifestyle consultant. None of these changes improved Kmarts financial situation. By the times it declared bankruptcy, it had lost money in 5 of the past 10 years.
Out of bankruptcy, Kmart became profitable primarily by closing or selling (to Sears and Home Depot) around 600 of its retail stores. Management had been unable to invigorate sales in its stores. Declared guilty of insider trading, Martha Stewart went to prison just before the 2004 Christmas season. In a surprise move, Edward Kampert, Kmarts Chairman of the Board and a major shareholder of Sears, initiated the acquisition of Sears by Kmart for 11 billion in November 2004. The new company was to be called Sears Holdings Corporation. Even though management predicted that the combine companys costs could be reduced by $500 million annually within three years through supplier and administrative economies, analysts wondered how these two struggling firms could ever be successful.

The subject of my thesis is to do a research on my company which shows the effect of being a customer centric organization on both customer experience and employee satisfaction.
I need to structure a literature review for my thesis which discuss , links and reflect the relationship among the three main concepts namely, customer experience, employee satisfaction and, the customer centric organization. The thesis should thoroughly explain the link between the three concepts, customer experience, employee satisfaction and the customer centricity approach, the thesis hypothesis were constructed as follows:-
The higher the customer centricity of an organization, the higher is the positive customer experience and employee satisfaction
The higher the positive customer experience, the higher is the employee satisfaction and the customer centricity awareness of its employees.
The higher the positive customer experience, the higher is the employee satisfaction.

The literature review should focus to define each concept and its role with different parties such as the customers and the employees, in addition, the report should clearly define the links between these concepts and the effect of each on the other. The report should start with the definition of the three main concepts separately and then shows the links of each of them and its effect on the operation of the organizations. The report should show the ability to critically evaluate relevant literature information, indicates the ability to integrate and synthesis the existing literature, and gives the credits who have laid the groundwork of my research. The literature review should provide new theoretical insights or develops a new as the conceptual frame work of my research, the literature review should be focused and posses unity and coherence.

ODHS selected the Worldview Globalcom product for implementation in the E-mail Upgrade Project.

The project was accomplished in 14,960 hours versus the planned 12,000 hours, at a total cost of 1.56M versus the planned 1.25M over a ten month (versus nine month planned) schedule.
The Worldview vendor team had five key deliverables in the project, one of which was delivered 30 days late and another 10 days early.
The Ohio Department of Corrections, as a result of watching this effort, is deploying the Globalcom product for their organization.
Users report that they are very happy with the new e-mail system.
Mahoning Countys infrastructure was too old to support the new e-mail system; they are being migrated next month as a separate project.
The Worldview contract was completed within established cost.
The Globalcom products spam filter requires a different network configuration than is currently in place for the network.
The project team suffered from a 20% turnover rate during the life of this project, and exit interviews reveal salary was the overall cause.
Develop a Lessons Learned document for the Worldview project with these specific action items:

1.Write three project success criteria that would have been included in the charter??"you may use or reference the project objectives you wrote in Unit One. Explain your criteria.
2.Using the addenda items detailed above in addition to information you creatively develop, write your lessons learned based on the criteria and the three components of cost, schedule, and performance (you may use these as individual sections of your paper). Note, not all the addenda items may even be pertinent.
3.Answer the following in a summarizing, final page:
?-?Was the project a success? Why or why not?
?-?If not, were portions of the project a success, and what was the impact of those success areas on the overall determination of project success?

Topic: Personal Success Plan - Part 2

For this assignment, you will submit a three-page paper identifying the tools, techniques, and experiences you currently possess. You will identify those tools, techniques, and experiences that are above the requirements of your next major career objective but are not yet adequate. Focus on your communication skills, especially your ability to listen deeply and to manage conflict, and create a plan to improve incrementally in these areas over the remainder of your career.

In business, you will often be asked to conduct research on a topic that is beyond your current expertise. To complete this in an effective manner that results in a positive outcome for you and the company ? and leads to more faith and trust in your analytical skills ? you need to learn how to effectively communicate expertise from various sources. This assignment is a literature review. (Consult Building Block Document in the learning module for details before beginning)
Your writeup will contain the following sections.

I. Keywords and combinations used for searching ? do this for 3 building blocks.

II. Retrieve and review three different library articles. Summarize each article in two paragraphs. This should effectively communicate what the key question(s) is(are) in the article, how the article answers the question(s), and what those key findings are.

III. Construct a synthesis of the three articles. How do the articles relate to each other? Do they agree on all points, or do they disagree on some points? Describe the key lessons learned from the three articles as a whole. (This requires you to assemble the information into your own thoughts).

IV. APA style citations of the three articles you used.

Building Blocks: Techniques for Searching Online Databases
These study notes are intended to introduce you to the "building block" technique for searching online databases. The "building block" technique is applicable to most online databases.
In doing a "building block" approach to searching online databases, you will use the following tools:
? Boolean operators
? The search history
? Truncation
? Viewing the results of searches
? Keeping the results of searches
Our hope is that, by the time you are ready to tackle your formal report, you will be skilled enough to find valuable scholarly research with relative ease.
? Take a minute to familiarize yourself with Galileo. Galileo Tutorial
? Conducting a sample keyword search in Academic Search Premier (ASP). Choose a topic that relates to your intended area of research for your formal report project
? After you have finished conducting the search, take a moment to think how you might be able to apply the technique to searches for information about your research interests. Do not reduce this to a ?just get it done? exercise. Plan to apply incorporate it into your personal library toolbox.
? Make a mental note of the number (not exact!) of times you do NOT see ?HTML Full Text? or ?PDF Full Text? appended to the citation in the list of results. If the ?? Full Text? does not appear, the article is not available online in full text.
o Which format makes it easier for you to skip to specific sections of the article?
o Which one displays the tables better?
o Which one loaded more quickly?

Searching Online Databases: An All-Purpose Guide

Searching a Database Is NOT a Linear, One-Shot Process
1. Break your research topic into two or three basic concepts.
2. Decide which database is most likely to provide appropriate information on your topic.
3. Learn the "conventions" of the database(s) you plan to search. Study the database screens, use the "Help" section of the database itself, and/or ask your KSU librarians for suggestions.
4. Find words or phrases to express each of the concepts.
5. Don't assume that you have retrieved ALL there is or the BEST there is.
6. Carefully study the results and be willing to try different approaches.
7. Don't hesitate to repeat the above process several times
Boolean Operators
Boolean Operators are simply the tools used to group, combine, or intersect terms when searching electronic databases (or the World Wide Web).

OR is more; AND is less; NOT is a snob.

OR locates all documents in a database that contain either one or both of the terms (or groups of terms) on either side of the OR. Using OR broadens a search.
AND stipulates that both terms (or groups of terms) on either side of the AND must be present in the documents it retrieves. Using AND narrows a search. Warning: the more terms you AND together, the smaller the results of your search. ANDing too many terms may even return zero results.
NOT excludes the words or phrases that follow it. It narrows and focuses a search. although it must be used cautiously, it can be very helpful.

Nesting
Using parentheses ensures that the Boolean operators work in the sequence you intend, e.g.
aggression and (television or cartoons)
The OR operation is "nested" and will be performed first. Then the AND operation will be performed. Thus, the search will retrieve items on aggression and television as well as items on aggression and cartoons.

Combining Boolean Operators using the Search History feature.
Note: This technique works in the EBSCO databases if you use the Search History feature in the Advanced Search mode.
1. Using or, combine a group of terms related to the first concept. Think of synonyms, near-synonyms, even antonyms. It will be block/search/set #1.
2. Again using or, do the same for the second concept to create block/search/set #2.
3. If you have a third concept, use or to combine the terms into block/search/set #3.
4. Intersect the blocks/sets/searches by using and: #1 and #2 and #3
The "Building Block" Technique Using Key Words (Academic Search Premier)
Key Words = Words that convey concepts you think the database understands
Databases are as dumb as mud!

Here are the search terms you will use to complete a library key word search assignment:

success OR achievement OR dropout*
AND
distance learn* OR distance education

The step-by-step instructions follow below, but first a few tips:
? The asterisk at the end of "dropout" is a truncation symbol. It enables you to search for any words built upon the "dropout-" stem; e.g., dropout, dropouts.
? The truncation symbol at the end of "distance learn" enables you to search for any phrases built upon the "distance learn-" stem; e.g., distance learner, distance learners, distance learning.
? A truncation symbol can be used only in keyword searches.
The Rationale for the Search Strategy
? When you type your keywords, a database search engine is very obedient and will look for them everywhere in the database. However, when you selected the keywords, you had a concept in mind. The database search engine is too dumb to understand concepts. All it knows is words or phrases. Thus, you must try to think of many words or phrases to express your concept and use them to "speak" to the database, to tell the search engine to fetch them for you.
? Once you have chosen the various terms to convey your concept, you must gather them into a group (i.e., the "block") with or. The or tells the database's search tool to retrieve any item in which any of the terms appears.
? You need not limit yourself to synonyms. Including antonyms is often a successful technique.
Remember: Databases are as dumb as mud.

Step by Step Instructions for Accessing Academic Search Premier and building blocks
1. Start at the KSU Library Resources and the Galileo Home Page GALILEO
2. Click the Database A-Z link in the gold-colored bar near the top of the library home page.
3. Type EBSCO into the box and click Find Database.
4. Click on Academic Search Complete.
5. You will then be taken to the Basic Search screen, which has many limitations as a search tool.
6. Click the blue Advanced Search tab just above the green banner.
Building the First Block
1. Type success into the first of the three search slots.
2. Click the little down arrow beside the second search slot and use your mouse to select or.
3. By selecting or you are telling the database to look for anything in which EITHER of the terms appears.
4. Type achievement into the second search slot.
5. Click the little down arrow beside the third search slot and use your mouse to select or.
6. Type dropout* into the third search slot.
7. The asterisk at the end of "dropout" is a truncation symbol. It enables you to search for any words built upon the "dropout-" stem; e.g., dropout, dropouts. Thus ASP must look for "dropout" or "dropouts" as it searches the database.
8. Click the Search button.
ASP will look through the entire database and retrieve anything and everything that contains any one of the terms you typed.
9. ASP obediently displays the results of its effort, probably around 10,000 citations, but you will see of them displayed on the first Web page.
Ignore the results.
You have successfully completed the construction of your first block. You must clear the search slots before you can start on the second block. Unfortunately, there is no easy one-step method for clearing the search slots.

Clearing the Search Slots
? Click the New Search link 'way up at the top of the ASP screen. Don't panic when the Basic Search screen reappears; you've not lost your first "block"!
? Click the blue Advanced Search tab.

Building the Second Block
1. Type distance learn* into the first slot.
Again, the asterisk (truncation symbol) saves you from having to type "distance learning" or "distance learner" or "distance learners" or any of the other words built upon the "learn-" stem.
2. Click the little down arrow beside the second search slot and use your mouse to select or;
3. Type distance education into the second slot.
4. Click the Search button.
5. The results of this search are not as great, but ignore them anyway. Instead, prepare to clear the search slots for the next step, intersecting the two blocks.
Clearing the Search Slots
? Click the New Search link way up at the top of the ASP screen.
? Click the blue Advanced Search tab.
? Click the blue Search History tab. You'll find it under the search slots. (Ignore the Search tips link.)
Intersecting the Two Blocks
1. When you click the Search History tab, you will see your two searches, just waiting for you to do something with them.
S1 = the search for "success or achievement or dropout*"
S2 = the search for "distance learn* or distance education"
2. Type s1 and s2 into the first search slot and click the Search button.
? Typing just the numbers of the searches certainly beats having to type all the terms again!
? ASP used or to "gather" the terms; now you are using and to "winnow" (sift) them.
? Intersecting the two searches with and tells ASP that it must retrieve ONLY items in which at least one term from BOTH searches is present.

The failure to communicate effectively is often greatest threat to project success. Discuss the importance of communication in a project.

Using the case study refer to the communication issues faced by the PPARS Project. (http://audgen.gov.ie/documents/vfmreports/VFM_51_PPARS_Report.pdf)
