QUESTIONS
1. The strategy of PRCM management was to outsource most aspects of the mine design (including the mine electricity supply and ventilation) and the operation of the mine (including constructing the mine, extracting the coal, and financial, environmental and safety processes). Drawing on strategic management principles, explain why this management strategy would have been adopted and explain the problems of this approach.

2. Investigations into the disaster clearly point to poor management decision-making as contributing factors. Drawing on two functions of management (planning and leading) discuss some examples of poor management decisions.

3. Sound decision-making is an important role for both managers and workers alike. Using the ventilation system as your example, what were the main influences in the decision-making processes and what were failures of decision-making processes?

4. The case study on PRCM illustrates that there were serious communication problems, for instance between the mine management and the company Board. What were some factors that impeded communication within the company and how could these aspects have been better managed?

While this is a technical case, you are expected to apply the management theory taught in class and the textbook. You are also expected to research further using peer-reviewed journal articles and Pike River analysis. Start your research early to gain high marks- the links below are a good starting point.

Please submit a comprehensive outline.

Just as boards of directors vary widely on a continuum of involvement in the strategic management process, so do top management teams. For example, a top management team with a low involvement in strategic management will tend to be functionally oriented and will focus its energies on day-to-day operational problems. In contrast, a top management team with high involvement will be active in strategic planning. Both boards of directors and top management can be placed on a matrix that reflects four basic styles of corporate governance. The four styles are chaos management, entrepreneurship management, marionette management, and partnership management. Research these four styles, examine the philosophies behind each style, and identify examples of organizations that illustrate the dynamics associated with each style. Speculate which style/s is/are the most effective, the least effective, the most prevalent, and the least prevalent. Justify your answers.

Submit a Reflective Paper in which you explain how these aspects work together to perform that primary function. Are any aspects more important than the others? Why or why not? How do you believe the HRM role can be optimized for shaping organizational and employee behavior?

Leadership and Ethics
PAGES 8 WORDS 2612

The leader of your client organization has observed a lack of flexibility and a slow decision-making process in many of the departments. He believes that he is not serving his customers well, and has decided to move to a team environment and to push many of the decisions to the lowest possible levels. In other words, he wants to create a team-based, empowered organization. Several of his best managers are resisting the idea strongly. They not only feel that many employees are not ready for the change, but they also believe that they personally could never change from a "command and control" style to allowing more participation (Nahavandi, 2006, p. 54).

How should the leader deal with the situation?
How are leading and managing different?
Is the CEO trying to lead or manage this change initiative?
What arguments can he use to persuade his managers?
What can he do to help his managers change their style?

NOTE: Please prepare 8 pages report, in APA format, to answer the above questions.

Chapter I Presentation

Note: Only 300 words is required

Write a paper of no more than 750 words in which you respond to the Broadening Your Perspective 17-2 activity titled "Managerial Analysis" in Ch. 17 of Accounting.

BYP17-2 Ideal Manufacturing Company of Sycamore, Illinois, has supported a research and development

(R&D) department that has for many years been the sole contributor to the company?s

new farm machinery products. The R&D activity is an overhead cost center that provides services

only to in-house manufacturing departments (four different product lines), all of which produce

agricultural/farm/ranch related machinery products.

The department has never sold its services outside, but because of its long history of success,

larger manufacturers of agricultural products have approached Ideal to hire its R&D department

for special projects. Because the costs of operating the R&D department have been spiraling uncontrollably,

Ideal?s management is considering entertaining these outside approaches to absorb

the increasing costs. But, (1) management doesn?t have any cost basis for charging R&D services

to outsiders, and (2) it needs to gain control of its R&D costs. Management decides to implement

an activity-based costing system in order to determine the charges for both outsiders and the inhouse

users of the department?s services.

R&D activities fall into four pools with the following annual costs.

Market analysis $1,050,000

Product design 2,350,000

Product development 3,600,000

Prototype testing 1,400,000

Activity analysis determines that the appropriate cost drivers and their usage for the four activities

are:

Total

Activities Cost Drivers Estimated Drivers

Market analysis Hours of analysis 15,000 hours

Product design Number of designs 2,500 designs

Product development Number of products 90 products

Prototype testing Number of tests 500 tests

Instructions

(a) Compute the activity-based overhead rate for each activity cost pool.

(b) How much cost would be charged to an in-house manufacturing department that consumed

1,800 hours of market analysis time, was provided 280 designs relating to 10 products, and

requested 92 engineering tests?

(c) How much cost would serve as the basis for pricing an R&D bid with an outside company

on a contract that would consume 800 hours of analysis time, require 178 designs relating to

3 products, and result in 70 engineering tests?

(d) What is the benefit to Ideal Manufacturing of applying activity-based costing to its R&D activity

for both in-house and outside charging purposes?

broadening your perspective

-Use present tense only. Example don?t write: Wal-Mart has been known as the leader??.. Instead write it as ?People know Wal-Mart as the leader? Don?t use any words ending in ?ed? past tense.

-Use proper in text citations

-Use only the latest version of the NEW APA format

-Simple, simple, I mean simple English so I can understand it

Please read the following two articles (and all the background readings). You are to write a 5 page paper which integrates the lessons which can be learned from the two different scenarios relating to project management success. What are the key success factors in this two seemingly different scenarios? What are the commonalities between these two organizations (with respect to the projects involved)?
Your paper will be evaluated on how well you can demonstrate that you understand the principles of project closing discussed in the background materials and can use those principles to discuss the case readings. Especially important is for you to be able to discern and describe the common attributes of these very different projects.

Compare and contrast the approach that a project manager would take in planning and managing two very different types of projects as described in the appended project charters. The projects are:

? Highway Expansion Project (HEP)
? Next Generation Cell Phone Product (NGP)

Suggested approach:

The following approach to organizing and writing this assignment is strongly suggested. Consider the project planning process that the project manager would need to generate for each of these charters considering the very different objectives of the two projects.

Compare the similarities and differences for the planning processes and elements discussed in each of the Chapters 2 - 6. For example,

? for Chapter 2 how would your company go about selecting these projects (vs. other alternatives) and identify the appropriate success measures for each of these projects. Compare / contrast.

? for Chapter 3, what specific skills sets would the ideal PM have for each of these project types. Compare / contrast.

? For Chapter 4, discuss/ analyze any implications for conflict resolution and negotiations for the two projects. Compare/ contrast.

? For Chapter 5, compare/ contrast an optimal project organization for both projects

? for Chapter 6, compare the elements of the project plan including WBS, schedule, scope management and risk management plans. Do not do an actual project plans for each of the projects. Compare / contrast.

Project Charter: Highway Expansion Project (HEP)

Project Manager: MGT609 Student

Business Need:
Due to increase vehicular traffic, the NJ Department of Transportation has awarded Stevens Construction a contract to expand the NJ Turnpike from 6 lanes to 8 lanes between interchanges 11 and13.

Product Description:

Stevens Construction will expand the current highway by two lanes in each direction. The roadway will meet all relevant Federal and State requirements for asphalt highway construction and safety.

Most of the actual construction will be conducted off-hours to minimize the impact on current traffic.

Constraints:
? Budget not to exceed $87,000,000
? Construction complete no later than April 30, 2017
?

Assumptions:
? Contract signed no later than September, 2011
? A $500,000 bonus will be paid for each month that the highway is completed before March 1, 2016.

Exclusions:
None

Project Charter: Next Generation Cell Phone Product (NGP)

Project Manager: MGT609 Student

Business Need:

Motorokia, a global producer of mobile telephony products has decided to develop and produce a next generation touch-screen based cell phone to compete with Apple?s and RIM?s latest products. Without this new generation of product, we are concerned about significant loss of market share.

In order to respond to this competitive threat we need to develop and market our own next generation product within six months from today; our new product must exceed the performance of the competitive products.

Product Description:

Since we do not currently have a competitive product, the NGP must leap-frog available technologies and as such we are planning to use new hardware and software technologies (fluorescent flat screen, Web x.0 software) that have never been used in similar products. Motorokia has very limited experience in the use of these technologies.

Constraints:

? The product must be available for shipment, six months after project funding.

Assumptions:
? The required new technologies will be available no later than 90 days before required product shipment.

Exclusions:
None

A report to study a hypothetical organization, introduce it, describe it's current problems, show what options the organisation has, make recommendations, conclude and provide reference list with Harvard Referencing.

My lecturer has instructed not to "Throw a book at him" in the report. Meaning..not to write too much stuffs that are already in textbooks and other literatures. What's important is how we apply the concepts we learned in our Organisational Behaviour Management module to a theoratical organisation.

I'm thinking of writing about this particular organisation which is currently practising "scientific management" and how there is high turnover of staff in the production dept due to low motivation. The Marketing Dept has been bringing in sales but the Production Dept seems not being able to cope up.
They seem very efficient in their processes but are not effective.
The CEO and the director of Operations were Army buddies and they started the company from scratch. Hence, the rigid and disciplined "Scientific Management' approach.( Frederick Taylor:http://www.businessmate.org/Article.php?ArtikelId=223 )

Recommendations can be 'Job Design Theory' and matrix structure for improvement, bring in new talents etc..( or anything you think is appropriate).

Job Design Theory:
Jobs with variety of skills, task identity and significance, autonomy directly affects the psychological states of employees.
Meaningfulness of work and and personal responsibility for results.

The report needs to have a current organisational chart and a recommended organisational chart for improvements.

I have uploaded a skeletal draft of my own work at: http://goo.gl/Z5QAE
Will also email/upload to any place that you want me to upload to.

PS.. the report need to be genuine and not plagiarised as my University is using 'turnitin' plagiarism software to check students' works.
There are faxes for this order.
