Project Management: Lessons Learned From Project Plans in the New World The article Project Plans in the New World (Rosenwinkel (1995) provides many useful insights into how to manage a complex project successfully, taking into account the many factors or variables that are crucial for a project's success. The author concentrates on the "Free Wheeler" type of project leader who often ignores constraints of time, cost and resources in determining how to successfully manage a complex project to completion (Rosenwinkel, 1995). Comparing this article to experiences launching new products, followed by an interpretation of two "people" and "project" variables, and a summary of how a project's direction and scope would need to be modified based on lessons learned from Rosenwinkel (1995) are presented in this paper.

The pragmatic tone of the article indicates the author has experiences many projects that have been successful and many that have failed to accomplish their intended goals and objectives. What makes the article so valuable is that the lessons learned with regard to project coordination and collaboration and the realistic series of guidelines the author gives for avoiding the common problems that make large-scale projects fail. Of the many useful insights provides, the most riveting is the fact that project managers have greater responsibility and visibility than ever before, which translates into a much higher level of accountability for performance as a result (Rosenwinkel, 1995). This is both invigorating and threatening as well, yet it does force the "Free Wheeler" to amplify their specific needs and requirements even more and attempt to get more in control of projects that they are paradoxically driving further out of scope with their activities (Rosenwinkel, 1995). In reading over what Rosenwinkel (1995) has provided in terms of contextual guidance, the many efforts of the company I work for today to launch new products is very apparent in the lessons learned. The process of launching a new product takes in inordinately high level of orchestration and collaboration across an enterprise.
