Case study: Michelle
Michelle is a 38-year-old woman who comes to counselling because she is dissatisfied with her life but is not sure how to make changes to it. Michelle has a successful career in publishing and has been in a relationship with her partner Dave for four years. Michelle tells you that although she has a great life on one level ??" she loves her job, and she and Dave are well off, have lots of friends and regularly dine out etc ??" she also feels trapped and secretly wants to run away to live a quieter life in the country. She says that she has recently been feeling down and unsure of what direction she wants her life to go. She and Dave have talked about having children but she feels anxious about taking a career break and unsure if she really wants to have children. If they do have children she may have to give up her career or cut back on work, which means that she may lose out on promotions and career progression. At 38, Michelle feels that she has to make a choice about family and her career, and yet she is unsure what do to.

Prepare a case study that involves some type organization with which you are familiar. For this requirement, student may use the case study approach to solve an organizational challenge/ problem, surface an issue of concern, or other issue. Use as a source an interview with a CEO, senior manager, existing work situation, or past personal work experience. Case study usually present one to several issues affecting the organization and may be positive or negative or both. They may include a multitude of issues such as culture, ethics knowledge, various type of problems, communications, managerial challenges, various personality conflicts, or a combination of these. The student goal should be to present the case from the perspective of a selected issue or issues. The selected issue is clearly defined in the presentation of the case.

Identification, It is essential early on in your paper that you provide a sharply focused diagnosis of strategic issues and key problems and that you demonstrate a good grasp of the companys present situation. Make sure you can identify the firms strategy and that you can pinpoint whatever strategy implementation issues may exist Review the study questions for the case. Consider beginning your paper with an overview of the companys situation, its strategy, and the significant problems and issues that confront management. State problems/issues as clearly and precisely as you can. Unless it is necessary to do so for emphasis, avoid recounting facts and history about the company (assume your professor has read the case and is familiar with the organization).
A Guide to Case Analysis and Evaluation, This is usually the hardest part of the report. Analysis is hard work! Check out the firms financial ratios, its profit margins and rates of return, and its capital structure, and decide how strong the firm is financially. Table 1 contains a summary of various financial ratios and how they are calculated. Use it to assist in your financial diagnosis. Similarly, look at marketing, production, managerial competence, and other factors underlying the organizations strategic successes and failures. Decide whether the firm has valuable resource strengths and competencies and, if so, whether it is capitalizing on them.
Check to see if the firms strategy is producing satisfactory results and determine the reasons why or why not. Probe the nature and strength of the competitive forces confronting the company. Decide whether and why the firms competitive position is getting stronger or weaker.

ANALYZING A CASE STUDY FROM VISION TO REALITY
To analyze a case, you need to apply what you've learned to each of these areas. We offer a summary of the steps you can take to analyze the case material for each of the eight points we just noted. These points will also include the recommended steps in Nanus (1992) Visionary Leadership:
1. Analyze the company's history, development, and growth. A convenient way to investigate how a company's past strategy on their vision and mission and structure affect it in the present is to chart the critical incidents in its history - that is, the events that were the most unusual or the most essential for its development into the company it is today. Some of the events have to do with its founding, its initial products, how it makes new-product market decisions, and how it developed and chose functional competencies to pursue. Use Nanus (1992) five-question model on Page 45.
1. What is the current state of the mission or purpose of your organization?
2. What value does the organization provide to society?
3. What is the character of the industry or institutional framework within which your organization operates?
4. What is your organizations unique position in that industry or institutional structure?
5. What does it take for your organization to succeed?
2. Identify the company's internal strengths and weakness Internal Vision AUDIT Apply Chapter 4 in Nanus (1992) for the SWOT. Once the historical profile is completed, you can begin a simple SWOT analysis. This particular case analysis for OLAM 430 is not to discuss in depth the strategic plan, but rather the following components along with the Vision Audit:
1. Strengths- discuss current issues that strengthen the organization from the leadership to internal structures.
2. Weaknesses- possible concerns regarding the externals-
3. Opportunities- current successes and initiatives
4. Threats
Use all the incidents you have charted to develop an account of the company's strengths and weaknesses as they have emerged historically. Examine each of the value creation functions of the company, and identify the functions in which the company is currently strong and currently weak. Some organizations might be weak in marketing; some might be strong in research and development. Make lists of these strengths and weaknesses.
3. Vision Audit Include the following questions in your analysis after considering the SWOT.
1. Does the organization have a clearly stated vision? If so, what is it?
2. If the organization continues on its current path, where will it be heading over the next decade? How good would such a direction be?
3. Do the key people in the organization know where the organization is headed and agree on the direction?
4. Do the structures, processes, personnel, incentives and information systems support the current direction of the organization?
4. Evaluate the current analysis towards a shared vision. Having identified the company's external opportunities and threats as well as its internal strengths and weaknesses, you need to consider what your findings mean. That is, you need to balance strengths and weaknesses against opportunities and threats. Is the company in an overall strong competitive position? Is there vision sharing within the corporation? Is the leader communicating a sense of vision towards the future? What can the company do to turn weaknesses into strengths and threats into opportunities? Can it develop a new functional process to make a change in the future?
5. Analyze corporate-level strategy- through the vision and mission. To analyze a company's corporate-level strategy, you first need to define the company's mission and goals. Describe the vision of the organization. Sometimes the mission and goals are stated explicitly in the case; at other times, you will have to infer them from available information.
6. Internal identifiers on the vision (complete by the end of Week 6)- Applying chapter 6 in Nanus discuss the The Vision Choice include the following:
1. The Leader as the Great Synthesizer
2. Mapping the Domain
3. Generate Alternative Visions
4. Choosing the Right Vision
5. Packaging the Vision
Identifying the functional strategies that a company pursues to build competitive advantage through superior efficiency, quality, innovation, and customer responsiveness and to achieve its vision and goals. The SWOT analysis will have provided you with information on the company's functional competencies. You should further the research related to the development strategy to gain a picture of where the company is going. For example, pursuing a campaign to inform on the new vision or change in the organization requires a plan and may vary across the various organizational structures of the corporation. Once you complete this analysis, you will have a full picture of the way the company is operating and be in a position to evaluate the potential of its vision or new vision.
7. Analyze change . Organizational change is an issue in many cases because the organizations are attempting to alter their strategies or structures to solve problems. Thus, as a part of the analysis, you might suggest an action plan that the company in question could use to achieve its goals in sharing a vision. For example, you might list in a logical sequence the steps the company would need to follow to alter in order to accomplish the plan- Use chapter 6 in Nanus (1992) to guide you through the change and finding the right vision for the organization.
8. Make recommendations- Implementing the Vision. The last part of the case analysis process involves making recommendations based on your analysis. Obviously, the quality of your recommendations is a direct result of the thoroughness with which you prepared the case analysis. The work you put into the case analysis will be obvious to the professor from the nature of your recommendations. Your recommendations should be in line with your analysis; that is, they should follow logically from the previous discussion. For example, using the Nanus (1992) chapter 7 Making it Happen: Translating Vision to Reality define how the organization will fulfill the vision (i.e. the leader as the spokesperson). The set of recommendations will be specific to each case, and so it is difficult to discuss these recommendations here. Again, make sure your recommendations are mutually consistent and are written in the form of an action plan. The plan might contain a timetable that sequences the actions for changing the company's strategy and a description of how changes at the corporate level will necessitate changes at the business level and subsequently at the functional level. Finally, use the Properties of a Good Vision in Nanus (1992).
After following all these stages, you will have performed a thorough analysis of the case and will be in a position to join in class discussion or present your ideas to the class, depending on the format used by your professor. Remember that you must tailor your analysis to suit the specific issue discussed in your case. In some cases, you might completely omit one of the steps in the analysis because it is not relevant to the situation you are considering. You must be sensitive to the needs of the case and not apply the framework we have discussed in this section blindly. The framework is meant only as a guide and not as an outline that you must use to do a successful analysis.
STEP IV
WRITING A CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
A course requirement for OLAM 430 is to write a case study, you will need to present your instructor with a written case analysis. Whatever the situation, there are certain guidelines to follow in writing a case analysis that will improve the evaluation your work will receive from your instructor.
The structure of your written report is critical. Generally, if you follow the steps for analysis discussed in the previous section, you already will have a good structure for your written discussion. All reports begin with an introduction to the case. In it you outline briefly wht the company does, how it developed historically, what problems it is experiencing, and how you are going to approach the issues in the case write-up. Do this sequentially by writing, for example, "First, we discuss the environment of Company X... Then we discuss the current vision in company X,
In the second part of the case write-up, where you mention the SWOT analysis make sure you use plenty of headings and subheadings to structure your analysis. For example, have separate sections on any important conceptual tool you use. Thus, you might have a section on Nanus on defining the organization (p. 45)- (see above under point 2). Answer the five questions
In the third part of the case write-up, present your solutions and recommendations. Be comprehensive, and make sure they are in line with the previous analysis so that the recommendations fit together and move logically from one to the next. The recommendations section is very revealing because, as mentioned earlier, your instructor will have a good idea of how much work you put into the case from the quality of your recommendations.
Following this framework will provide a good structure for most written reports, though obviously it must be shaped to fit the individual case being considered. Some cases are about excellent organizations experiencing no problems. In such instances, it is hard to write recommendations. Instead, you can focus on analyzing why the company is doing so well, using that analysis to structure the discussion. Following are some minor suggestions that can help make a good analysis even better.
1. Do not repeat in summary form large pieces of factual information from the case. The instructor has read the case and knows what is going on. Rather, use the information in the case to illustrate your statements, to defend your arguments, or to make salient points. Beyond the brief introduction to the company, you must avoid being descriptive; instead, you must be analytical.
2. Make sure the sections and subsections of your discussion flow logically and smoothly from one to the next. That is, try to build on what has gone before so that the analysis of the case study moves toward a climax. This is particularly important for group analysis, because there is a tendency for people in a group to split up the work and say, "Ill do the beginning, you take the middle, and Ill do the end." The result is a choppy, stilted analysis because the parts do not flow from one to the next, and it is obvious to the instructor that no real group work has been done.
3. Avoid grammatical and spelling errors.
4. In some instances, cases dealing with well-known organizations dont include up-to-date research because it was not available at the time the case was written. If possible, do a search for more information on what has happened to the company in subsequent years. Following are sources of information for performing this search:
The World Wide Web is the place to start your research. Very often you can download copies of a companys annual report from its Web site, and many organizations also keep lists of press releases and articles that have been written about them. Thoroughly search the companys Web site for information such as the companys history and performance, and download all relevant information at the beginning of your project.
Compact disk sources such as Lotus One Source and InfoTrac provide an amazing amount of good information, including summaries of recent articles written on specific organizations that you can then access in the library.
F&S Predicasts provide a listing on a yearly basis of all the articles written about a particular company. Simply reading the titles gives an indication of what has been happening in the company.
Annual reports on a Form 10-K often provide an organization chart.
Organizations themselves provide information if you write and ask for it.
Fortune, BusinessWeek, and Forbes have many articles on organizations featured in most cases.
Standard & Poor's industry reports provide detailed information about the competitive conditions facing the company's industry. Be sure to look at this journal.
5. Sometimes instructors hand out questions for each case to help you in your analysis. Use these as a guide for writing the case analysis. They often illuminate the important issues that have to be covered in the discussion.
Creative Writing 202 CASE STUDY: Writers at Work
Two of the best things for an apprentice writer to do ??" for any writer to do ??" are to observe and to steal. This is an assignment designed to help you do both. Read at least 3 short fiction stories by T. C. Boyle. Read these pieces for the sake of seeing how they work and why they work. Then, write a 1000 word/4 page essay discussing these elements. MLA format for any works cited.
Give some background on this writer. What things has this author written ??" what are his key works? What compelling biographical factors are there? Write about what excites captivates and interests you in this persons short fiction: How does the author do it? What techniques, ideas, approaches, ideas do you find? Your job is to pay passionate attention to the specific dynamics that make you find this persons work compelling. Feel free to share some excerpts.
As for stealing: the point is not to take techniques to copy exactly, but to open yourself up to principles that you can adapt and appropriate. This kind of literary larceny is actually the convergence of creative minds gaining insight and energy from one another. Simply being able to recognize techniques at work is a gift.

Case Study: Atom Films
The Market for Short Films in the year 2000
Short films, or "shorts", are loosely-defined as films that are shorter than feature length movies - but generally range from one to twenty minutes. Wide spread in Europe, where they were typically shown before feature films in movie theaters or bundled together and broadcast in 30 minute or 1 hour time slots, short films occupied a different niche in the U.S. entertainment market in the year 2000. There, short films were generally produced to showcase the talent of an actor, director, or producer who was seeking support or funding for a feature film. As a result, the commercial U.S. short film industry was much smaller than its European counterpart.
Mika Salami's Idea
Mika Salami grew up in Finland watching innovative shorts on Finnish television and developed an early interest in creating, promoting and sharing entertainment. As a teen, he was a DJ, a rave promoter and the manager of a rock band. After completing his MBA degree at INSEAD in France, he moved to NYC to work for Sony International Music, and noticed the lack of short-form content in the U.S. entertainment industry. Mika thought there was an interesting market opportunity and put together a business plan for a short-film distribution company, modeled on an independent label in the music industry. While researching the short-film industry, he was amazed to find that there were hundreds of small distribution companies - yet the industry remained small and invisible to the general public.
The lack of general funding in the mid-nineties for film distribution companies led Mika to realize that in order to build a sustainable revenue stream, distribution of short-form content would need to span multiple distribution channels (e.g., theatre, TV, CD-rom). And so, still unsure about how to make the business plan a reality, Mika moved to Seattle to join Real Networks as Director of Business Development for their entertainment division.
After successfully launching RealAudio - a software "player" that enabled consumers to listen to digital music files on a PC - the company began to develop an audio-visual player. There was little web-friendly entertainment content available, so Real Networks commissioned Spike Lee to create four short films specifically for the launch. And Mika realized that his business plan could be adapted to satisfy the need for a central clearinghouse for Internet-friendly entertainment content. He started AtomFilms in 1998.
Building a ?Business-to-Business? Company (B2B)
Mika quickly identified content acquisition and content distribution as two critical areas and he hired Jannat Gargi and Brian Burke to build those departments. Jannat Gargi?s approach to acquiring content was by building awareness at major film festivals by using a grassroots public relations: hosting parties, giving away free stuff...
One of the most memorable publicity stunts of the early days was at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, when the team rented a bus and showed short films inside. Everybody - including the press - loved it, and the AtomFilms brand soon became synonymous with short, independent filmmaking. And submissions of short-film reels by amateur and
professional filmmakers started pouring in when Holiday Romance, the first film acquired by Atomfilms, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999.
Content distribution was similarly built using grassroots tactics - calling every distribution channel possible to find someone who would buy the films. The first break came in December 1998, when Air Canada purchased five films for broadcast during their shorthaul flights. Shortly afterward, several other airlines and cable television stations, such
as the Sundance channel, also began to purchase content.
Adding an Online Consumer Component (B2C)
Mika hadn?t forgotten his original vision of creating a superior web entertainment experience, so in 1999, he built a consumer web site to showcase the company?s best short films, create a community for short-film makers, and generate more public interest in short films. The AtomFilms website was a huge hit from the day it launched. The
traffic and number of registered users on the website experienced exponential growth.
However, the advertising and merchandise revenue streams from the website were overshadowed by the licensing and syndication revenues generated from the offline distribution channels. In addition whereas the website?s revenues were small, the people and technology required to support site maintenance and development were substantial. Still, Mika viewed the AtomFilms wite as an important component of the company?s brand identity, marketing strategy, and consumer outreach. With many people visiting the site and sharing AtomFilms content with their friends, the intangible
impact of the site was significant.
The Growth of AtomFilms
As the confidence in Mika and his management team grew, so did the revenues and client base of AtomFilms. By the end of 2000, AtomFilms had generated almost $5.8 million in revenues, including approximately $3 million in licensing and syndication revenue, $1.7 million in advertising and sponsorship revenue, and an additional $.1 million in merchandise sold through the company?s website. By that time, the website had accumulated a total of 15.2 million unique visitors and 1.8 million registered users.
Users, who were spending an average of 15 minutes per session on the site, had viewed over 31 million films. Along the way, several major content acquisition and distribution deals or sponsorships contributed to the rapid growth of the firm:
A series of partnership deals enabled AtomFilms to acquire a bundle of short films at a low cost. Most notably, AtomFilms acquired the rights to 100 films from the University of Southern California?s film school, including shorts made by George Lucas and Robert Zemeckis when they were film students.
Another major deal brought Angry Kid, the first Internet-only animated character, for exclusive viewing on the AtomFilms site. Within seven weeks, Angry Kid was watched by over one million people and set an Internet record as one of the most popular characters in the history of the Internet.
Intel used AtomFilms content to stream audio-visual content over the web and demonstrate the power of its microprocessors to its customers.
For the first time in over 25 years, a short film preceded a feature length film in theaters when Century Theatres ??" which owned and operated over 700 screens in 11 Western states ??" featured AtomFilms short films for the launch of their CineArts 6 multiplex in Evanston, Illinois.
Volkswagen partnered with AtomFilms to showcase the carefree and fun lifestyle the company was promoting. VW sponsored a cross-country tour in a VW van that brought one of AtomFilms? short films entitled The Journey to major college campuses across the U.S., and VW mentioned the AtomFilms partnership in a national print and radio ads aimed at drawing traffic to the vw.com website.
The Challenge of Anticipating Future Growth
In the midst of this growth, Mika struggled to allocate financial and human resources between the B2C and the B2B sides of the business. The B2B licensing and syndication business generated sizeable revenues and profits from the company. Yet, Mika believed that the size of the overall B2B film distribution market was relatively small. On the other hand, the B2C side of the business generated significant traffic and public relations for the company, but web traffic was difficult to monetize. This raised the question of which side of the AtomFilms business model was most sustainable in
the long term. As the company expanded in size and scope, Mika needed to decide where to focus precious time and resources.
These questions also raised issues about the AtomFilms brand. So far, the company had built strong brand associations as independent, hip, and short-film entertainment, with a loyal following among young, college-age males and the
independent filmmaking community. However, th company now sought to broaden its viewer base in order to increase overall market demand for short-film entertainment.
Mika was unclear if the brand could appeal to a larger audience, if the B2B and B2C channels could continue growing under the same brand and what types of marketing campaigns were appropriate for a company of this size in each of these channels.
The Challenge of Adapting to New Technology
In addition to maximizing market opportunities, Mika was concerned about how quickly to react to new technology advances. He was convinced that emerging wireless platforms were the ideal conduit for AtomFilms content. The company?s vast library of short-form content was perfect for the new digital consumer. Telecom partners had
approached AtomFilms to license the content, but Mika was concerned that the technology was not quite ready and that potential consumers might be dissatisfied with the slow speed or inefficiency of wireless content transfer. In addition, the telecom partners would not allow Mika to decide how to market or deliver the content to consumers and he wondered how to mitigate the risk of a poorly executed deal that exposed AtomFilms content to millions of consumers.
Peer-to-peer networks were also growing and a successful audio-video peer-to-peer network could become the leading platform for entertainment content. If more intelligent applications were developed that enabled consumers to navigate vast arrays of content more efficiently, and if filmmakers chose to distribute content via these networks, AtomFilms would be redundant in the consumer content distribution space. Mika wondered if he should partner with one of these unproven networking companies before the old distribution model became obsolete.
Choosing a Path Forward
With daily announcement regarding failed online entertainment start-ups, Mika needed to act decisively and help the company move forward. During a recent senior management meeting, three models had been put on the table:
1. AtomFilms could forge ahead with its current business model but place more emphasis on seeking several core corporate sponsors for its website. So far, several consumer product companies, including Ford and VW, had expressed interest in paying to maintain a constant presence on the AtomFilms site.
2. AtomFilms could introduce a subscription or pay-per-use fee on the AtomFilms website, in order to monetize consumer traffic on the site. However, fears of turning away consumers upon the introduction of such a subscription fee had prevented the company from implementing this model in the past.
3. AtomFilms could leverage its relationships with filmmakers, talent agencies, production houses, and movie studios to gain a stronger foothold in the offline entertainment market. Under this scenario, AtomFilms would scan its thousands
of film submissions to identify talent or scripts that might be useful to a talent agency or production house. In exchange, AtomFilms might participate in future revenue streams if the talent or scripts were used to produce a major feature film.
Questions:
Summarize AtomFilms? business model using the Who, What, How framework. Assess whether and why the elements of the business model are mutually consistent and reinforcing.
Identify which of the strategies from Chapter 5 each of Mika?s possible approaches corresponds to (see Chapter 5 in the Fred David book).
Using a framework of your choice (see Chapter 6), determine which of the strategic alternatives you would recommend that Mika adopt. Explain why.

Unit VII Case Study
Read the Gillette case study in Chapter 18 on page 532 of the textbook. Answer the three questions at the end of the study (p. 533). Support your answers with a minimum of one source per question, no more than five years old. Your answer to each question should be approximately 400 words using APA format.
1. CONTENT IS KEY AND I KNOW THAT IN A LOT OF CASES THERE ARE WORD COUNTS ON YOUR ASSIGNMENTS BUT I WOULD LOVE TO GET MORE FROM YOU.
2. APA IS CRITICAL ON ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY AND TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THOSE DREADED HIGH TURNITIN SCORES I HAVE A GOOD RULE OF THUMB OF 3 TO 5 CITATIONS PER PAGE FOR LONG PAPERS AND 2 TO 3 CITATIONS FOR SHORTER PAPERS. ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO SEE 1 REFERENCE PER PAGE WRITTEN AS WELL. OF COURSE THIS IS A GOOD RULE OF THUMB.
3. MY THRESHOLD FOR THE TURNITIN SCORE IS 20% IF YOU CAN KEEP IT BELOW 20% AND NOT ABOVE 29% YOU SHOULD DO WELL.
4. FORMATTING IS IMPORTANT AS WELL WHICH MEANS EACH PARAGRAPH SHOULD BE INDENTED AND EACH REFERENCE SHOULD BE INDENTED TOO ON THE SECOND AND SUBSEQUENT LINE. MAKE SURE SPACING BETWEEN PARAGRAPHS ARE CLEAN AND UNIFORM AS WELL AND MAKE SURE YOUR MARGINS ARE NO MORE THAN AN INCH. LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST ON THE REFERENCE PAGE MAKE SURE IT STARTS ON THE LAST AND SEPERATE PAGE.
If you were to conduct a cohort or case-control study based on your paper topic that you selected in week 1, how would you design a that study? In other words, write a case-control or cohort study proposal based on your topic from week 1. Please feel free to use a diagram to explain your study.
Please provide a study proposal that is 2-3 pages in length. This study proposal will be used in your final paper/project.
Research topic: Obesity
I need a book review on the book entitled "Windows on the Future: Education in the Age of Technology" (authors: Ted McCain and Ian Jukes, published in 2001). The overall content of this book is about technology in education. For the book review, it should be related to technology in Design education, especially in graphic design education. The book review should include the critical analysis and expression of personal opinion on a facet of design instruction.
Topic: Compare the government?s version of Design?Build method with industry?s version of Design?Build (10
USC 2862 and FAR 36.209 vs Design?Build Institute of America)
Each student will be required to write a 3-4 page paper (12 font, double spaced)
Issues related to Architect-Engineer Design contracting are not limited to the Federal Acquisition
Regulations Part 36 issues such as Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, AE Liability but also include
construction implications of differing site conditions, change orders, contract delays, modifications,
warranties, as well as specific applications of environmental law, fiscal law, zoning regulation and
public safety.
The ?hot? topic must be analyzed using the FAIR model. The FAIR model consists of gathering the
Facts, making Assumptions as necessary, developing the Issues involved, and providing
Recommendation or a Result. The business of building and maintaining public infrastructure is
complex and has far reaching consequences.
As a senior Contracting Level II specialty course, students are expected to be working at an
advanced level and the papers should reflect sound research and require specific references to Public
Law, FAR, DFARS, Agency Supplements to the FAR, and court cases to be cited.
Intro to Operations Management Mod 3 ? Case
Design of Goods and Services
Global firms like Regal Marine know that the basis for an organization's existence is the good or service it provides society. Great products are the keys to success. With hundreds of competitors in the boat business, Regal Marine must work to differentiate itself from the flock. Regal continuously introduces innovative, high-quality new boats. Its differentiation strategy is currently reflected in a product line consisting of 22 models. But why must Regal Marine constantly worry about designing new boats? The answer is that every product has a life cycle. Products are born. They live and they die. As Figure 5.1 shows, a product's life cycle can be divided into four phases: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline.
Figure 5.2 shows the four life cycle stages and the relationship of product sales, costs, and profit over the life cycle of a product. When Regal is developing a new model boat, it typically has a negative cash flow. If the boat is successful, those losses may be recovered and yield a profit prior to its decline. The life cycle for a successful Regal boat is three to five years.
To maintain this stream of innovative new products, Regal constantly seeks design input from customers, dealers, and consultants. Design ideas rapidly find themselves in Regal's styling studio, where Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology speeds the development process. A Regal design engineer can start with a rough sketch or even just an idea and use the graphic display power of CAD as a drafting board to construct the geometry of the new boat. The CAD system helps the designer determine engineering data such as the strength, dimensions, or weight. It also allows the designer to be sure all parts will fit together. Existing boat designs are always evolving as the company tries to stay stylish and competitive. Moreover, with life cycles so short, a steady stream of new products is required. A few years ago, the new product was the 3-passenger $11,000 Rush, a small, but powerful boat capable of pulling a water-skier. The next year, it was a 20-foot inboard-outboard performance boat with so many innovations that it won prize after prize in the industry. Then it was a redesigned 42-foot Commodore that sleeps six in luxury staterooms. With all these models and innovations, Regal designers and production personnel are under pressure to respond quickly.
By getting key suppliers on board early and urging them to participate at the design stage, Regal improves both innovations and quality while speeding product development. Regal finds that the sooner it brings suppliers on board, the faster it can bring new boats to the market. The first stage in actual production is the creation of the "plug," a foam-based carving used to make the molds for fiberglass hulls and decks. Specifications from the CAD system drive the carving process. Once the plug is carved, the permanent molds for each new hull and deck design are formed. Molds take about 4-8 weeks to make and are all handmade. Similar molds are made for many of the other features in Regal boats-from galley and stateroom components to lavatories and steps. Finished molds can be joined and used to make thousands of boats.
Please turn in a paper of one to two pages (page counting does not include cover and reference list) discussing the following questions,
1. How does the concept of product life cycle apply to Regal Marine products?
2. What strategy does Regal use to stay competitive?
3. What kind of benefits are Regal achieving by using CAD technology rather than traditional drafting techniques?
Expectations:
1. Answer questions with clarity.
2. Show depth and breadth in your paper to enhance the quality of your paper.
3. Try your best to search in our library to find some papers/articles to support your argument and show them in the reference list.

Case Study:
You are a consultant working with a dental office that has just merged with another dental practice. The original office housed 3 dentists, 2 dental assistants, and 1 receptionist in one location. With the merger, there are now 5 offices in different parts of the city, 15 dentists, 12 dental assistants, and 5 receptionists. Four of the dentists work in the offices but also are mobile in that they provide dental checkups to elderly patients in their homes or at the senior citizen centers, and to school children in the three inner-city elementary schools. The mobile dentists need to be able to send and receive patient records while they are out of the office. All the dentists and dental assistants must have real-time access to all patient records and daily schedules. The lead dentist has reminded you that they are required to meet HIPAA requirements for protecting patient information. You, as a telecommunications specialist, have been asked to design the telecommunications network to support this new multi-location practice. Others on the team will develop the applications and databases. Your task is to identify the requirements and design a network solution that will meet those requirements.
The Paper:
Define the requirements and then design an appropriate network that would support this dental practice. Your answer should:
1. Analyze the given case and provide a clear set of requirements for the network solution
2. Identify the information that is to be protected and the related security requirements
3. Identify the types of network(s), components, devices and equipment that would be involved in meeting the needs of the stationary offices and the mobile dentists
4. Provide a network design diagram that clearly shows an appropriate network configuration to meet the requirements, with components properly labeled
5. Explain the benefits of the proposed network solution.
6. Identify the risks and risk mitigation strategies associated with the proposed network solution.

If yes, then
If no, then..
Requirements
1. Your report should include the following:
2. A cover page with your name, project title, course, and date submitted
3. An introductory section that explains the purpose of the paper
4. Your overview of the security issues that will be addressed in your security plan
5. The body of the paper, which meets the requirements above

Security Plan: Walter Widget
An owner of the Walter Widget manufacturing plant (see Diagram 1 - Attachment located in Course Content Section) has received a notice of from their insurance carrier because the building is not equipped with a security plan. A diagram of this building is provided in the sketch. The insurance underwriter is requiring the business owner submit a comprehensive security plan or face significant (and clearly not affordable) increases in their insurance premiums.
Walter Widget manufactures widgets. Office employees work a traditional 40 hour business week (9-5, M-F); the plant operates on 2 shifts, seven days per week. No one is on the premises during non-business hours. It has a workforce of approximately 240 personnel; executives, sales, clerical support, skilled machinists and semi-skilled laborers as well as a small maintenance and janitorial crew. Offices are equipped with computers and traditional support equipment. With the exception of the vending machines and personal money in desks, lockers, etc., there is no cash in the building. IT records include personnel files, sales and invoice records and general business information. Walter Widget has no government contracts at this time and is not classified as an identified terrorist target.
Walter Widget has evolved from a small, 10 person shop over the last 9 years. Vacancies are posted in the local paper or communicated by word-of-mouth. Hiring practices include completion of an application and interview with the General Manager. Hiring is generally based on skill qualification and personal impression. Workers are not unionized. There have been no reports of work-place violence or employee pilferage.
The building is not equipped with an alarm system of any kind. (The building owner has agreed to install this fire alarm system.) It is located in a business/manufacturing are of the city with light to modest police patrol. The surrounding community is primarily blue collar or no-collar households, but is evolving downward due to deteriorating economic conditions. Crime for the areas is increasing gradually in all categories, but highest in larcenies from autos and scrap metal thefts.
1. The building owner has provided you, the commercial security management company, with a list of questions about the design of a security system. Your task is to respond to the questions and to present a comprehensive security plan for Walter Widget. Specific costs are not requested at this time, beyond a reasonable consideration of the limited fiscal resources of this company.
You need to respond in writing to the following questions:
Should the building be alarmed? If so, what protections would be appropriate for this physical plant?
What personnel hiring practices and/or policies should be implemented?
2. Beyond their individual skills training, what employee training would be appropriate for Walter Widget employees from a security standpoint?
3. What levels of IT security, if any, would be appropriate for this company?
The insurance underwriters agent has mentioned a guard force several times. What is your recommendation and why?
4. Walter Widget is also concerned about the security of its employees in the workplace, and also as they leave the building to the two acre employee parking lot (next door) or public transportation across the street from the main plant entrance. What security would be appropriate for these areas?

Title
Study the potential of moving Bahrain ministries IT services into a private cloud computing.
Background
Technologies are evolving in a way that create a lot of opportunities for companies and governments to change the current methods of providing IT services. Most of the governments have shifted from centralized IT services (Mainframes) to distributed model in late 80s (client/server) distributed and managed by small IT Organization in each entity in the Gov.
Again this time the a reversal model is shining, the cloud based offering is an alternative way of managing IT and providing services. The opportunity is build a private cloud managed by a new centralized entity that can provide most of the common IT services and staffing needed to maintain and support this new model.
The research shall challenge the situation and do the required assessment to take a decision whether to go or not through studying the main driver behind moving to private cloud and study the key advantages, disadvantages and risks.
Problem Statement
? What are the key challenges to move the Government of Bahrain IT system or part of it to a private cloud managed by a centralized IT Org.
? What are the key benefits to move the Government of Bahrain IT system or part of it to a private cloud managed by a centralized IT Org.
? What are the key risks to move the Government of Bahrain IT system or part of it to a private cloud managed by a centralized IT Org.
Research Objectives
? To determine the key challenges behind moving the Bahrain government distributed IT system into a centralized private cloud IT services managed by a specific and separate IT Org.
? To determine the key benefits behind moving the Bahrain government distributed IT system into a centralized private cloud IT services managed by a specific and separate IT Org.
? To determine the key risks behind moving the Bahrain government distributed IT system into a centralized private cloud IT services managed by a specific and separate IT Org.

Overall Learning Objective
This PAPER is about the understanding of assessing and developing the survey research methodology within an educational setting. (Use survey research method to determine attitudes and behavioral intentions of the students in a university regarding their acceptance of e-learning.) This paper has three parts; Abstract(1 page)+29 pages for first part, 25 pages plus 15 annotated references for second part, and 5 pages for the last part.(Total 75 pages) (Template of the paper is in Appendix A)
The first part, the breadth component, will identify the differences between three important research paradigms. Then, define, compare, and contrast various types of research methodologies with a particular emphasis on survey research methodology, using a selected bibliography to evaluate the methods.
Second part, the depth component will present the strengths and weaknesses of the survey methodology, evaluate data collection instruments and sampling strategies, and outline the key steps that must be taken to ensure successful use of the approach. This part will also include 15 annotated literature review including particularly relevant studies and dissertations (I have attached some literatures, you may have to find the rest), and an assessment of the research methods and findings covered in the literature, which may be applied to my dissertation.
The third part, application component will provide details of how the survey research method will be specifically used in my thesis work.(to determine attitudes and behavioral intentions of the students in a private university in a rural area of Nigeria regarding their acceptance of e-learning???This can be done by identifying a problem for the research, the research purpose, research questions, theoretical foundations of the proposed research, and the methodology used to conduct the research.

2500 words
Part 1
a) Describe quantitative/positivist and qualitative/interpretivist methodological approaches; include examples of their research methods of data collection. [750 words]
b) Traditionally epidemiology (prevalence, distribution and determinants of disease) has focussed on quantitative research for the types of research designs that are associated with Part 2 (a). Can social epidemiology (prevalence, distribution and social determinants of disease) include both quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches? - Critically discuss [750 words]
Part 2
a) Based on your reading of books such as Beaglehole (1993) http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2006/9241547073_eng.pdf describe what you know about observational epidemiology as a research approach and compare it to experimental studies. Describe some of the designs within each, e.g. RCT, Case-Control studies, etc
[500 words]
