Importance of engaging in stress management
Stress management is an important behavior to engage in as stress can lead to serious health complications and reduce a person's quality of life states de Brouwer et al. (2011)
A person who is stressed has a high blood pressure, increased heart rate, tensed muscles, and a rise in their respiration rate. Continuous stress levels will put a person's body in a perpetual response state. This means that they will always have a high blood pressure, above normal blood sugar levels, and their muscles tensed always.
According to Roohafza et al. (2012)
engaging in stress management, a person is able to regulate their bodily functions and ensuring that they maintain good health. Stress has been associated with chronic diseases like heart attacks and stroke. When one is not stressed they are able to enjoy their life more, are more happy because the person does not have anything bothering them psychologically, and one increases their productivity both at work and home, because one is more focused and able to concentrate on the task at hand. A person who is able to maintain their stress to be minimal has better looks and look more attractive. Stress affects a person health and causes them to lose sleep or eat unhealthy foods, but a person who manages their stress levels will always have a full night sleep which improves their health, and body.
Motivators for stress management
The intrinsic motivators for managing stress are having the desire to lead a healthy and long life, be more productive at work, school, or at home, maintain good looks and be attractive, and finally to lead a happy enjoyable life. With knowledge on the health effects of leading a stressful life, a person can be easily motivated intrinsically to make amends and start managing their stress levels. Continuously feeling tired and unable to handle daily activities is an indication of stress. If a person desires to regain their active lifestyle and have the energy to tackle daily tasks without feeling tired, they will need to start managing their stress levels. To fight off depression is also another motivator for stress management. Depression causes a person to be sad, miserable, unhappy, or blue.
Extrinsic motivators are external forces that cause a person to desire to manage their stress levels. These motivators might include getting better grades, earning more money, and competition. A student who is stressed and has been performing poorly would have to start managing their stress levels if they desire to improve their grades in order to pass their course. The desire to earn more money would encourage an employee to manage stress so as they can better perform their duties in the workplace. Competition from other participants either at work or in school can motivate an individual to manage their stress to ensure they can compete.
Positive and negative influences towards achieving stress management
Pastorino, Ellen Pastorino, and Doyle-Portillo (2005)
posit that the positive influences for stress management are unused energy is diverted out of the body, and reliving of strong emotions that trigger a stress response. Other positive influences of stress management include increased productivity either at school or home. This is because a person's energy is used properly. Increment in a person's quality of life because they are able to divert unused energy, and divert the mind which encourages a person to have more fun, and more enjoyment. There is a continual feeling of well being because the person is healthier, and they have a positive outlook of life. One has a better mental health because they are eating well, getting enough sleep and rest.
What other people think of stress management is the main negative influences towards achieving this behavior. Majority of people will tend to think negatively when they hear a person is attempting to manage their stress, which would negatively impact the person trying to achieve this healthy behavior. The negative attitudes by others will cause the person to have difficulties in sticking to their behavior, and they might eventually not be able to manage their stress.
Motivational strategies for increasing the effectiveness of stress management
Staying active and building up some momentum will allow a person to keep the momentum going, and this way one is able to adapt their body slowly to managing stress. Keeping the company of other people who are also working towards managing their stress will ensure that one remains motivated Shenton & Beautyman, 2012.
