Leadership Vision in Nursing

Over the last several decades, nurses have been playing an important role in the quality of health care services that are provided to patients. Part of the reason for this is because, they are being called upon to fill many of the traditional roles that were often reserved for doctors. As these health care professionals, are seen as someone who is able to provide leadership in areas that may often go unnoticed. This is when a nurse can truly make a difference by: doing something more that will have a positive impact on those around them. Evidence of this can be seen with Jean Watson and her Caring Theory on Nursing, which involved seven different principals. This would redefine the way health care solutions were being provided, with nurses playing a major role in helping to offer support to patients. As a result, this is a sign of how effective leadership in nursing can help to improve upon the kind of solutions that are being delivered. To fully understand this requires examining: key concepts of visionary leadership, critiquing the evidence and examining the importance to nursing. These different elements are significant, because the combination of them will show how effective leadership can transform a heath care environment. This is when the trained nurse can be able to have a positive impact on patients and colleagues. (Watson, 2008, pp. 1 -- 31)

Key Concepts of Vision

To have any kind of effective leadership, you must be willing to collaborate with others on a regular basis. The reason why, is because good communication will help to improve the ability of nurses to understand the specifics about a particular patient. In the event that there is some kind of emergency, they are aware that this individual could be allergic to various medications and other substances. At which point, they make everyone aware of these adjustments. This helps the facility to avoid a costly error. While, it is simultaneously protecting the patient at all times. This is significant, because it is illustrating how effective leadership is based upon having a sense of purpose in working with everyone. (Alleyne, 2007, pp. 230 -- 243) (Swearingen, 2009, pp. 107 -- 114)

Critique of Evidence

When you analyze this evidence, it is clear that this is an effective tool for demonstrating true leadership. Where, the individual can be able to improve the quality of care that patients are receiving. As they are using flexibility and good communication; to ensure that they are looking out for the best interests of stakeholders.

Importance to Nursing

This is significant, because if this approach can be used, it will help nurses to redefine their relationship with patients. Once this occurs, is when they can begin building off the gains of other theories in health care (i.e. Watsons' Caring Theory on Nursing). This is the point that each person can make a difference in those individuals they are interacting with.
