Theory the World Is Too

Last reviewed: February 24, 2013 ~5 min read
Abstract

The paper is an application paper that implements the various modes of memorizing material that people use in the daily lives. There is a poem that is taken to be used as a case study and the process that is used to memorize it outlined. It also highlights the two methods of rehearsals and points out which approach was used and how it was used.

Theory

The World Is Too Much With Us

The world is too much with us; late and soon

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;

Little we see in Nature that is ours;

We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;

The winds that will be howling at all hours,

And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;

For this, for everything, we are out of tune;

It moves us not. Great God! I'd rather be

A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;

So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,

Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;

Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;

Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

Modalities in memorizing a poem

There are varied modes of learning and memorizing literature. There are various types of learners or learning types but they are summarized into three major categories when it comes to memorizing literature-aural, visual and the kinesthetic memorization methods (Jennifer Mishra, n.d ).

In memorizing this particular poem and paying attention to the styles that I used to memorize it, I realized I was largely an auditory learner and thus use the same for memorizing. I am the kind of person who prefers listening and taking notes in order to learn. I also tend to listen to patterns and a lot of times countercheck with my colleagues to ensure I got the details straight. I tend to repeat words out aloud and repeat words out aloud for memorization and hence can recall better what I have heard. I generally use oral language more effectively.

In memorizing the poem, I had it recorded in the comp so I could listen to it back and try to grasp it as it played. I also read it out aloud whenever I was out of the room and through this I could hear myself and get it easier memorizing the poem. I also enrolled the free help of my younger brother in reading it aloud as I listened and memorized. As he was reading it I tried to say it along so I could see where I erred most and correct.

Apparently I used the visual method as well to memorize as well and not only the auditory method despite the fact that auditory was the predominant mode. I severally had a look at the poem even as I listened to the playback and the loud reading from my brother. This enhanced my memorizing of the poem and within a short time I had memorized it. Generally I feel the easiest and bets way of memorizing a poem is to hear it out aloud and form a mental picture of the sea described in the poem and the activities of the sea.

Types of Rehearsals

In trying to memorize information, there are basically two types of rehearsals that people engage in; the elaborative rehearsal and the maintenance rehearsal.

The elaborative rehearsal is a detailed manner of memorizing concepts by relating the words to the meaning and even their relations to other concepts within the discipline. This is as opposed to constantly repeating the word or the chunk of information in order to memorize (Craik, F.I.M., & Lockhart, R.S. (1972). For instance looking at a word like 'cell' you look up the meaning in the anatomy dictionary, you also find out what the purpose in the body is, you also look at the shape and draw it then see how it works. With various counts of doing this, one is able to memorize the cell and the surrounding concepts.

On the other hand, the maintenance rehearsal is mainly committed to the short-term memorizing of concepts. It relies mostly on sight or sounds of words, number and the letter which is immediately followed by retrieval. It involves simple rote repetition for memorization of material. This memorizing method involves deep semantic processing of an item that is supposed to be remembered giving some level of durable memory (Jeffry Ricker, 2013).
