The relationship between performance and motivation has been subject to research ensuring that organizations increase in performance. Understanding what compels workers to work harder by the management improves on efficiency in the organization. The sources of motivation for workers in an organization differ depending on the worker. Some workers associate motivation in the organization to the remuneration attained, others derive motivation from the growth within the organization while other derive motivation from the leadership. Understanding the source of motivation enables the organization to maximize on the sources to ensure that the workers perform maximally. The remuneration in the public sector is not a major source of motivation as the workload and resources available are limited (Kearney & Berman, 1999).
An effective way of ensuring that workers in the public sector are motivated is through empowering the workers. Empowering workers refers to giving workers the freedom to work freely when entrusted with a task. Empowering enables the workers to work independently under minimum supervision. Empowering workers improves the workers working environment through promoting responsibility and confidence. Empowering workers encourages them to accomplish the task given within the allocated time and producing quality work. Workers can improvise their own techniques to accomplish a task when empowered by their leaders.
