Education
Because spelling is such an important concern to me, my first step would be to appoint a person who is concerned with this area as I am. My first strategy would therefore to create a job advertisement in which the wording would indicate the importance of this concern for me. I would also emphasize the need for excellent research skills, so that the existing policy can be modified according to the latest information on the importance of teaching spelling, as well as strategies on how to do this. During the interview phase, I would ensure that all candidates are questioned on their devotion to teaching spelling, as well as whether they have any ideas on how to implement a policy regarding this across the curriculum. The candidate will also need considerable leadership qualities to handle not only the English department at the school, but also to help implement the policy across the curriculum. It is anticipated that this might be met with considerable resistance, which will have to be handled with tact and good leadership.
Once the candidate has been selected and appointed, I will begin to work with him or her to start researching and writing a new official policy. It is vital that this policy adheres to the newest research on teaching spelling and its importance to teaching in general. Also, I would like the policy to stipulate that teaching spelling is not exclusive to the English classroom and that strategies should be implemented across the curriculum to help our learners to spell well.
Once the policy has been researched and written, I will call a meeting with all the department heads for its discussion and approval. I will ask the new Head of English to explain in detail why this policy is necessary across the curriculum. I will then make a statement myself, explaining my personal rationale for implementing the new policy. After this, copies of the policy will be handed to every personnel member, who will then be allowed to comment, ask questions, and make suggestions for changes. All the suggestions will be listed for further consideration. Each personnel member will then receive an email with the listed suggestions for their consideration. A week will be allowed for further deliberation. During this week, the Head of English and I will be available for further questions if any personnel members need to discuss the new policy further. This week will be followed by the finalization of the policy.
Once the policy has been finalized by the heads of department, they will be given copies to distribute to the rest of the teaching staff. This will be the first phase of implementation. Each head of department will be required to encourage their subordinates to comment, ask questions, raise concerns, and make suggestions about the policy. These will then be forwarded to the Head of English and to me. Any viable further suggestions will be implemented and a final version of the policy will be distributed to all staff members. The second phase of implementation will then be to put the policy into practice.
This will mean that each personnel member will be required to devote a segment of their teaching time to spelling in their particular discipline. The way in which this occurs will be left to the discretion of each teacher. The final phase of the implementation will be monitoring.
