Abnormal Person Affects, Behaviors, Cognitions, And Perceptions For this study, a person who is abnormal in every sense and connotation of the word was chosen. This person displayed extremely neurotic, paranoid, and often unexplainable behavior in a variety of situations. First of all, the subject proved to be affectively disturbed by exemplifying emotional extremes. For example, this person, a 42-year-old female, displayed an attachment to her 62-year-old mother that was child or infant like in its extremity.

The subject screamed and cried whenever she and her mother were threatened with separation, and clung to her mother upon her return. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the subject was shown a variety of photos with horrific scenes that would have excited a negative or sorrowful emotional response in psychologically healthy individuals and failed to make an emotional response. Additionally, the subject displays abnormal behaviors and cognitions as well.

Displaying extreme neurotic and paranoid behavior, such as the inability to focus, constantly thinking someone is spying on her, and an obsession with her mother's friends and dates. Furthermore, the subject's perception is similarly abnormal in that she seems to believe she is still a child although she is entering middle age. Because the subject's abnormalities seem to center on her mother, I believe her childhood relationship with the woman can explain some of her tendencies. As a child, the woman did not have a positive relationship with her mother.

She often left home, and, as a young adult, avoided speaking to her mother for years. Five years ago, the subject's mother was injured in a car crash that claimed the life of her father and almost killed the mother herself. At the time of the crash, the subject was not speaking to her mother. After the subject learned of her mother's injury, she had to be hospitalized, suffering anxiety and shock. During this time, her mother recovered, and when the two were united she started to display these abnormalities.

The Name of the Syndrome Because the symptoms began to appear after the car accident involving the subject's mother and because they include paranoia, and anxiety, mainly separation anxiety, the name of this syndrome is post-traumatic paranoid anxiety disorder. The Abnormal Person's Environment Currently, the subject resides with her mother and her mother's boyfriend in a two-bedroom apartment in downtown Chicago. Frequently, the subject's antics and rages at being separated from her mother have put a strain on the relationship between the mother and her boyfriend.

The family is embarrassed when the subject goes out because of her antics, but gets frustrated remaining in the same house with her. The mother is torn between what she knows is right for her daughter and what will make her daughter happy. As previously mentioned, the two did not get along well in the daughter's childhood years. In addition to the subject, her mother felt the strain of this relationship bitterly. She still deals with the trauma it caused her.

This lack of a relationship between the two women, and the presence of a father who, when rarely in the home, took the position of a strict disciplinarian lead to a stunted development for the subject. Although the abnormal behavior did not begin until after the accident, teachers recall mild paranoid behavior and odd actions toward her mother as early as high school's sophomore year.
