Should Women’s Medical Center’s Allow Abortion?

When most people think of care, they don’t think of death, killing, or murder: they think of nurturing, helpful, holistic treatment that supports life. Yet in today’s politicized world, the concept of care has been flipped on its head so that it includes killing—namely, the killing of children who are growing in the womb. Some believe killing babies in the womb is good for women and they call this killing “safe abortions” to make it sound more sterilized and nurturing. But the fact is that death is death and a culture that is insensitive to that fact is one asking for trouble. With that in mind, one should reflect on another fact: women's medical centers are dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services for women. These centers offer a wide range of services, including routine gynecological exams, prenatal care, cancer screenings, and contraception. They are often staffed by a team of healthcare professionals who specialize in women's health and are committed to providing high-quality care to their patients. Yet some believe that these centers should be centers where death can be delivered to life growing in the womb. They believe women's medical centers should allow abortion. This topic is divisive, obviously, because the US is divided down the middle, politically speaking, and opinions on the matter vary widely. Some argue that allowing abortion in medical centers that serve women is “essential” for providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare (that’s how they “spin” the murder), while others believe that it is contrary to the true mission of medical centers and can, moreover, create tension and conflict among staff and patients who object to the murder of innocent life. This essay takes the position that women's medical centers should not allow abortion. The purpose of this essay is to examine the reasons why abortion should not be provided in these centers. First, the essay will explore how allowing abortion can create tension and conflict among staff and patients. Next, it will examine how abortion is inconsistent with the mission of medical centers. Finally, the essay will argue that medical centers should prioritize providing essential healthcare services, such as cancer screenings, prenatal care, and contraception.

Women's medical centers should not allow abortion for a variety of reasons. But the first argument against allowing abortion in women's medical centers (even if people cannot agree that it is murder) is that allowing it can create tension and conflict among staff and patients who might not want that type of action done in their center. For instance, some staff may be opposed to providing abortion services, and may refuse to participate in them (Chavkin et al., 2017). As Chavkin et al. (2017) point out, there are many in health care who conscientiously object to the practice of abortion. Nurses and doctors who want to be abortionists or work with abortionists should do so in a place where that and only that kind of deed is done. But by bringing that kind of morally wrong conduct into a place that is supposed to be a place of health and healing is to invite conflict and turmoil on the highest scale. This can create enormous difficulties in staffing and scheduling, and may ultimately compromise the quality of care provided to patients. Patients may also feel uncomfortable or judged by staff members who are opposed to abortion, which can create a hostile or unwelcoming environment in the medical center. It is better to keep health and healing services separate from state-sanctioned death and murder services.

That point ties into the next point, which is that women's medical centers should not allow abortion as they are meant to be places of healing, and abortion does not fit into that mission. Medical centers are places where people go to receive treatment for illnesses and injuries, and to promote their overall health and wellbeing. Abortion, on the other hand, terminates a life, which is not consistent with the goals of healing and promoting health (Kaczor, 2022). Abortion “clinics” are like slaughterhouses—sterilized though they may be. The fact is they are dealing death not supporting life. Furthermore, abortion may have negative physical and psychological effects on women, which are not consistent with the goals of medical centers devoted to care.

Finally, medical centers should prioritize providing healthcare services that are essential for women's health (Lowdermilk et al., 2019). These services include cancer screenings, prenatal care, and contraception. Cancer screenings can help detect and treat cancer early, which can improve outcomes and save lives. Prenatal care is essential for promoting healthy pregnancies and reducing the risk of complications for both the mother and baby. Other services could be rendered such as physical rehabilitation for women who need to rebuild strength after surgery or sickness. Anything related to health and healing would be an appropriate service at a women’s medical clinic. Anything related to death and killing would not align with the priority of such a center. By prioritizing these essential services, medical centers can promote the health and wellbeing of women in their communities.
