Abstract

This master-level annotated bibliography examines the intersection of women's rights and abortion access through contemporary scholarship and legal analysis. The sources explore how legislative barriers, awareness gaps, and socioeconomic factors impact women's reproductive healthcare access. Key findings highlight the critical relationship between legal frameworks and health outcomes, demonstrating how restrictive abortion legislation disproportionately affects marginalized communities and creates significant public health challenges.

This article indicates that improper awareness and understanding of laws may impact how women seek medical services and consequently adversely impact their rights in accessing safe, legal abortion services. More importantly, it is imperative for women to gain awareness and comprehend their rights about abortion where the laws are liberal and have insight on how to access medical care. This source is relevant to my paper in demonstrating that women’s awareness of discernment of legal status can impact their care-seeking manners and capability to access both safe and legal providers in the setting where abortion is restrictive and also in settings where it is not. More so, this source will outline some of the barriers that hamper women’s right to abortion, including uneven accessibility of safe service and inadequate capacity to provide high-quality medical services. Also, other obstacles include socioeconomic circumstances and stigma.

Saharan, T., & Schulpen, L. (2021). Women’s rights agenda and fragmented advocacy for safe abortion in Kenya. Development in Practice, 1-11.

This scholarly article summarizes the fundamental women’s rights in advocating for safe abortion. Imperatively, the article accentuates that deterring abortion legislation gives rise to unsafe abortions, which leads to prevalent maternal morbidity and mortality. This source is relevant to my paper in demonstrating the different factors that hamper Women’s Rights Organizations in their advocacy for safe abortions against deterring legislation, including the prevailing societal norms, state laws, and a lack of cohesion amongst the organizations.

Berer, M. (2002). Making abortion a woman’s right worldwide. Reproductive Health Matters, 10(19), 1-8.

This article provides a comprehensive understanding of advocacy for safe abortion as an objective for public health and legal abortion as a fundamental right for a woman, including those hailing from marginal populaces, such as refugees and aboriginal communities. This source is relevant to my paper in demonstrating that abortion should be a right that makes it possible for a woman to decide. Specifically, the article will be pivotal in explaining circumstances such as unwanted pregnancies, rape instances, and also destructive relationships that warrant women to have the right to take control of their lives and make the decision to opt for an abortion or not. This implies that nations should endeavor to ratify the legalization and legitimization of the practice of abortion by women to make it safe.
