Founded by Dr. William Mayo and his family in the 19th century, the hospital has grown to become one among an elite community of health care providers in the nation (Fye, 2010). Not only is it an efficient medical non-profit organization, but it is also described by Fortune as one of the best companies to work for in the U.S. (Fortune, 2011). The Mayo Clinic Health System has several other locations in a variety of states throughout the U.S., making it one of the most visible and valuable health care providers in the nation, distinguished among peers; and as a teaching hospital it boasts a strong influence in the medical academic field, with its regional locations consistently ranking among the best, such as the Arizona campus, ranked best in the Phoenix metro area by U.S. News (2016).

For this reason, the Mayo Clinic is a highly prestigious health care system that invites the best and brightest physicians to come and train at its campuses, and offers top notch care to patients in its various locations. This paper will describe the organization, discuss its financial status and marketing abilities, its economic outlook and how outside influence plays a role in its development, and assess the organization in concluding remarks regarding the Mayo Clinic's role in the medical community.

Description of Organization 400 words

The Mayo Clinic today employs more than 30,000 individuals at its main base in Rochester, Minnesota. The Rochester campus is full of historical and architectural charm that couples antiquated architecture with modern facilities to achieve a dynamic look.

The patient and client base of the Clinic reaches over the 1,000,000 mark annually, as persons come from all over the world to receive specialized care from the Clinic at its various locations (Mayo Clinic Facts, 2015). Its level of clinical activity is high as it is devoted to research, education and treatment. It has nearly 600 physicians and medical scientists and over 3000 allied health personnel (Mayo Clinic Facts, 2015).

The Clinic's organizational structure is headed by CEO/President Dr. John Noseworthy (Newmarker, 2009). Noseworthy oversees the officers and directors elected by the Board of Trustees; together they operate the treasury departments, finance departments, research departments, educational departments, specialized medical departments and more (Mayo Clinic Governance, 2015).

The Mission of the Clinic is to "inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research" -- and the core value of the Clinic is that the patient always comes first (Mission and Values, 2015). The organization supports this aim through its diverse locations throughout the U.S., its commitment to top-tier research and educational facilities, and its continued excellence in providing quality care, as assessed by various institutions in the field.

The consumer and patient rights that the Clinic guarantees include the following: the right to emergency treatment, access to care, respect and dignity, privacy and confidentiality, safety, pain management, communication, charges, information/education, informed consent, advanced directives, refusing treatment and continuity of care (Rights and Responsibilities of Patients, 2008).

HR and employee issues that the Clinic addresses include salaries of physicians, incentives of employees, health care benefits, workloads, and organizational culture facilitation. The Clinic is devoted to keeping itself as employee friendly as it was family friendly when it first opened.

The community and global impact of the Clinic is impressive, as it is known throughout the world for its facilities, treatment, education and research. It is ranked best in its regional locations and is recognized globally as a leader in the medical community.

The Clinic provides financial assistance for patients who meet criteria of federal poverty guidelines, and it also accepts Medicare and Medicaid, which are federally funded programs for low-income families. Moreover, the Clinic is actively pushing for these federally funded programs to cover telemedicine, which is advanced eHealth services technology that allows patients to communicate with health care providers via digital technology and alleviates much of the stress and overwork of nurses, who otherwise are stretched thin; telemedicine is an innovative method of patient quality care that the Clinic embraces, which sets it even further apart from the standard health care providers across the nation that have yet to adopt eHealth services (Hiers, 2015).

Thus the main method of funding for the Clinic is through services provided, as the revenue is put back into the Clinic and its locations to serve the needs of the community and the greater global public. It also receives charitable donations which are tax-deductible, and it generates cash-flow from revenues.

The research issues it is currently committed to covering include topics in neurology (which it is best known for), but essentially the Clinic covers everything from advanced liver disease to Alzheimer's to zebrafish genetics (Laboratories, 2015). Thus, it is not limited in terms of scope and encourages its researchers to push the envelope in terms of making new progress in various areas of medicine.

The Mayo Clinic Health System is accredited by The Joint Commission, which is a national accreditation organization for hospitals. Every three years, onsite reviews are conducted by the Commission in order to ensure that the Clinic remains compatible with criteria established by the Commission (Accreditation, 2015).

Awards include Institutional and Individual types: the Clinic has been recognized as a DiversityInc top hospital, a top hospital for Hispanics in 2013, and individual awards have been given to surgeons and physicians at the clinic by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Rochester Heritage Preservation Committee (Awards, 2015).

Its marketing and branding strategies are evident in its websites and its devotion to cultivating its image as a leader in excellent service, information and care provided within the medical community.

Economic and Outside Influence

The Mayo Clinic stands, like other institutions, to be impacted by the Affordable Care Act and the various other pieces of legislation that come from the federal government and address issues of medical care, specialized medicine and payment plans. As the Clinic continues to implement new advanced technologies and services like telemedicine it pushes and lobbies for Congress to include these services within the basic scope of federally funded programs like Medicaid (Hiers, 2015). Thus outside influences do impact the Clinic, and further influences may be identified in an economy that is bordering on possible recession, which could further weigh on the ability of the Clinic to continue to operate, as it depends up on private funding donations as well as revenue backed by federally funded programs (if funds dry up as they tend to do in the wake of a recession, it could prove detrimental to the operations of the Clinic). If demand for services drops off like it did after the housing bust in 2008, Mayo Clinic may once again find its balance sheet in a state of shock (Evans, 2012).

The national and world economy may very well thus have a negative impact on the Clinic if it continues to teeter and threaten to collapse. Several indicators suggest that economy has not revived in the way that many hoped it would, and with central banking intervention only serving to stave off the inevitable correction in the marketplace, a collapse appears to be unavoidable at this point; indeed, with the UK voting on a referendum to leave the EU in the coming days, events could soon turn economically ugly if world leaders suddenly find themselves at odds with one another on a number of levels, subjects and issues.

Its expansion and development in terms of educational facilities, health care facilities, research departments, clinical studies, and commitment to care have made it one of the most visible and well-known health care providers in the country and in the world.
