Abstract Art Involves Paintings or Sculptures Which

Last reviewed: April 21, 2013 ~4 min read

Abstract art involves paintings or sculptures which do not have a clear depiction of a place, person or thing as it exists in the real world. The art is displayed in a distorted and exaggerated way. The subject of abstract art is based on what one sees in terms of color, size, shapes, scale and brushstrokes. Even though most people have liking towards abstract art personally I do not like abstract art at all. There are various reasons why I do not like this type of art.

First of all, abstract art refers to art which has no forms that can be recognized or art which does not aim to display anything. Abstract art in most cases is more personal and less figurative. Abstract art means a lot to the artist who did the art work since the image has some sense of appeal to the artists. When looking at abstract art I do not develop any relationship or feelings from the work. I just come in cold and have absolutely no grasp of what is going on in that particular work. I cannot appreciate the work simply because I don not have any idea of what is going on or what the artist is trying to portray (Gaya, 2011). Work that is total abstract only gives little clue on the thoughts of the artist. Abstract art does not make it easy for anyone viewing it to know its meaning from the artist's point-of-view. If only there could be a way that the artist could incorporate some sort of explanation in their work them it would be a lot easier for people to understand and hence appreciate abstract art.

Secondly the fact that abstract art appeals to the artist does not necessarily mean that it will appeal to those who view the art. The artist is appealed by the work because they know the reason why they created the art (Gaya, 2011).This is not the case for a viewer they are not appealed to by the art work as they can not make out what it means. If art work is not appealing what is its use. Art is meant for viewers to look at and appreciate, but if it does not appeal to them then there is no reason for an artist to produce any art work.

I also do not like abstract art because there is no creativity in this type of art. Any creative work has two dimensions in construction and its newness. Though abstract art has a lot of newness it lacks construction in a very big way. This is because abstract art lacks structures and pattern. Incase there is a pattern it is often repeated or very simple and therefore can not spur any interest in those looking at it.

At the same time abstract art is easy as compared to realistic painting. This means that artists who opt for abstract art are those who are perceived to have failed in realistic art .I also see abstract art as being meaningless and which has been randomly produced. Abstract art is simply decorative design and has no real artistic motive behind it. Some abstract art is chaotic and mediocre and therefore do not appeal to anyone viewing them. This type of art does not communicate anything meaningful and often frustrates the desire of people viewing the art when it comes to determining a clear meaning of the art (Stambor, 2006).
