Perseus and female factor in his life

Women play a particularly important role in Perseus' development as a man as he embarks on a journey to slay Medusa. The hero's experiences with women enabled him to look at the world from a different perspective and influenced him to take on attitudes that he knew would have a strong effect on his upbringing. Most women that he interacts with make it possible for him to experience progress and to invest even more resources in trying to achieve his goal. While Athena is a god and her role as a woman in the story is not necessarily important when regarding things from a feminist perspective, it is likely that Perseus' experience with women made it possible for him to believe that it would not actually be very difficult to slay Medusa.

It is intriguing that even though most women in the story hold submissive roles, Athena is actually the one supporting Perseus and the one to eventually be provided with Medusa's head. Perseus wants to kill Medusa in order to emphasize his role in front of Polydectes, as he knows that this would protect his mother and would discourage the king from going through with trying to become her lover.

To a certain degree, Medusa embodies all things considered to be feminine and it is thus essential for Perseus to consult a series of women before actually being able to deal with her. It is practically as if Perseus needs to go through a series of stages before he can be able to represent a real threat for Medusa. It is very interesting that Medusa's power is still effective after she has been slain. It actually seems that Perseus' role in this story was to emphasize the fact that women are typically powerless and in need of assistance. Perseus takes on a hero-like attitude and manages to trick every woman that he interacts with in appreciating his power. His mother considers him as her only solution, the three witches need to act in accordance with his wishes, the nymphs provide him with what he needs, and Medusa has no chance against him.

What Perseus learns in his journey to meet Medusa is that his power is greater than it might appear and that as long as he uses the right attitudes he is likely to experience success in his quest. His experience with women play an important role in him discovering his personal identity and developing in the person he needs to be in order to kill Medusa.
