ELLs IN TODAY'S SCHOOL
The case study on "ELLs IN TODAY'S SCHOOL" resonated with me because it highlights the changing demographics in U.S. schools and the challenges and opportunities that come with it. As a teacher, I believe in the value of trying to understand and appreciate the linguistic, socio-economical, and cultural diversity of our students. The case study gets at the importance of additive practices, which focus on building upon students' existing knowledge and experiences, rather than subtractive practices, which aim to replace or diminish their cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Gorski & Pothini, 2018).
In my school setting, we have a growing number of English Language Learners (ELLs) and we have made efforts to accommodate these students, but there remains a prevailing sentiment that the primary focus should be on English acquisition. This mirrors the subtractive practices mentioned in the case study. However, I believe that by embracing additive practices, we can create a more inclusive and learning environment for all students (Zaduski et al., 2023).

My belief is that the foundation of effective teaching is in understanding the pedagogical approaches being employed. Teachers need to know the difference between additive and subtractive practices. Training sessions would help: teachers could explore the theoretical and practical aspects of these methods. The benefits of additive practices are that it builds on students' existing cultural and linguistic knowledge (Manan & David, 2021). This can be highlighted in training.
I also believe that parents play a major part in the education of their children because they are the authorities in the home, where education is reinforced. When teachers go about inviting parents of ELL students into the classroom, they tap into that background of the learner’s culture and support. When parents share their stories, it helps to build bridges. This ultimately is how cultural divide is closed. This initiative can serve a dual purpose: students feel a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage, and other students gain exposure to different worldviews. Such interactions can foster mutual respect and understanding, making the classroom a microcosm of the global community.
Long-term Implications
A curriculum should reflect the diverse backgrounds of its students. Then students can see themselves reflected in the lessons and feel a deeper connection to the material. Literature from around the world can introduce students to different narrative styles and themes. History lessons can be broadened to encompass a wider range of global events and perspectives, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded view of the past. Science lessons can be tailored to address global challenges, emphasizing the interconnectedness of today's world.
Language is not just a tool for communication; people need to realize that it is a gateway to understanding. Traditional approaches that focus solely on English acquisition can sideline the backgrounds that ELL students bring. Dual-language programs can be a game-changer. With them, instruction is delivered in both English and the student's native language, which helps to show value to the student's native language; plus, it facilitates bilingualism.
Schools should be seen as part of the larger community. They should celebrate the cultures within the school. They should be a platform for students to showcase their traditions. This is what helps to bring together students, staff, parents, and community members together to be on one page. It is what helps in forging bonds of understanding and respect. Over time, these bonds can become unbreakable.
