Healthcare finance leadership through dental insurance and policy reform

¶ … career path that has led me towards healthcare finance, I am applying for the MBA with a long-term goal of serving as director of finance in a healthcare setting. I want to help healthcare organizations improve their fiscal strategies and manage costs and cash flow. Perhaps most importantly I believe I can help influence public policy to strategically improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery and health insurance in particular. Streamlining health insurance would be a core objective as I strengthen my career. My immediate goals are to continue learning about how finance relates to dental insurance, combining work and study in ways that allow for direct application of academic principles in the healthcare setting.

By the time I finish my MBA, I will have bolstered my career options so that I can pursue a leadership path in healthcare finance. I currently work as a Dental Insurance Analyst at the NYU College of Dentistry, a position that has been instrumental in shaping my career. Part-time pursuit of an MBA is ideal for me because I wish to continue my work at the NYU College of Dentistry while advancing my career. I completed my undergraduate degree with a BA in finance and accounting, and have a Masters in accounting. Extensive and rewarding work in accounting led me to eventually hone my skills to specialize in applying accounting wisdom to helping the healthcare sector thrive. I believe we are at a crisis point in the industry during which financial managers like me become critical change leaders. With visionary and transformational financial leadership, finance directors can ensure the ongoing integrity of American healthcare.

Ten months as a Dental Insurance Analyst at NYU has unequivocally sharpened my vision for the future. The reason I do not wish to leave my current position is that I believe my work at the NYU College of Dentistry has helped the organization. For example, I have developed connections with seven large dental insurance carriers via weekly meetings, claims resolution, and in-house finance meetings, analyze financial trends and report those trends to university department staff to enhance their understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and options. I also work closely with commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and Managed-Care dental insurance payers.
