With the goal of improving access to quality counseling service and improving the experiences of clients who receive family therapy, I am about to graduate from Cal State Los Angeles with a degree in psychology. Since I became aware of the impact that family relationships have on the quality of life of people living in the United States, I became determined to help people as a counselor. I have been through my own personal traumas, which has improved my ability to respond to the emotional and psychological needs of others. A transpersonal, interpersonal, and compassionate approach to family therapy is the key to helping clients and I hope to examine how to best apply established theoretical perspectives into my future personal practice.
A scholarship is an ideal opportunity to afford a student like me entry into a graduate program in counseling psychology. Partly because of limited access to financial aid but also because of the recognition it affords a student, a scholarship will kick-start my career. Because I know I will excel in my chosen field I can assure you that I will represent the scholarship fund as an outstanding student of counseling psychology. My dedication to the field is evident in my having excelled at my coursework but more importantly, I have immersed myself in real-world experiences that parallel my career goals. Volunteer positions, internships, and work-study experiences that are detailed in my resume will illustrate my dedication, my level of work experience, and also prove my ability to work well under pressure. Therefore, graduate school is an ideal environment for me to showcase my talents, network with like-minded students, and meet staff and faculty who can guide my learning experiences, open my mind to new theoretical perspectives, and allow me to participate in research and the advancement of our field as a whole.
