Japanese-American family attitudes toward long-term care services

Aging -- Proposal for an informative study of the attitudes of Japanese-American families regarding the utilization of long-term care services

This is a thesis proposal for an instructive study regarding Japanese-American attitudes toward using long-term care. The study will include examination of patterns of long-term care used by Japanese-Americans, influential factors, facilitators of long-term services and barriers to long-term services. The methodology will consist of: review of literature consisting of extensive studies of elderly Japanese-Americans and their families; interview questions for caregivers; interview questions for patients; and interview questions for patients' families. The interview questions will center on: cultural particulars of the Japanese-American elderly patient; self-care and autonomy; responsiveness to care needs; quality of care and staff; emotional connotations; social and physical environment(s); and costs. This study hopes to deduce an effective range of criteria within attitude formation and the dynamics of patient-family-provider interplay.
