¶ … American adolescents interpret non-commercial films that were created by participants in the VideoCulture Project. The study was conducted by having youths participate in viewing and commenting on 12 films. Generally, the study focuses on the question of what aspects in the films that the participants viewed make them sensible. By having discussions on each participant's analysis on each film, the study aims to analyse and find out the important aspects that young people considers when evaluating films.
Based from the group discussions of the participants about each video film, the research team had gathered that the youths value the explicit message that a film brings. They desire for a meaningful message in a film. Another aspect that interests youths is the ability of a film to motivate their curiosity. These elements, when explored further by the research team, were found to have been influenced by the youths' culture, environment, and experiences in their daily lives.
Critique of the Article The researchers made the article as a good source of information on how the youths view films and how their opinions are affected by several factors. The research team made use of a good method of analysis in relation to their research's purpose by carrying out film viewing among the participants. Further, by conducting group discussions where each of the participants' view is analyzed, the goals of the research team were facilitated.
In the first paragraphs of the article, the research team soundly discussed a very definitive process of how the study was conducted. It fairly discussed the study's purpose as well as what the research team aims to discover. The discussion on the opinion of the participants about each movie, as well as the contrasting views that may influence them, were useful information for the article's readers in identifying the basis of the research's results.
By discussing in detail the participants opinions after viewing the films, a reader can almost feel that he is present in the group discussion itself. In relation to the properly discussed methods and outcomes of the study, based on participants' opinions and analysis on the films they viewed, the article also discussed in detail several hypotheses relating to the elements that may affect the participants' analysis. Moreover, the article suggested related citations to some of its arguments.
However, in spite of the detailed information that the article presented in terms of the study's methods, literature review, and hypothesis, the article unfortunately lacks discussion and justification on the important part of the research that it presents -- the study's findings.
