Rudeness as a current cultural issue: causes and effects

Last reviewed: July 20, 2012 ~6 min read
Abstract

The causes and effects of rudeness are very profound. On the cause side, many unintended consequences arise simply from the misinterpretation of meaning. These misinterpretations often elude the perception of rudeness even when the original sender did not intend to be so. Work environment and to a lesser extent, the economy are also causes of rudeness as individuals are working in undesirable positions. In regards to effects, the main effect is the determination of the relationships between both parties. This effect often leads to broken relationship and broken channels of communication. All in all, rudeness has a significantly negative effect on all parties involved. It is best therefore to refrain from rash behavior and instead embrace a culture of cooperation and understanding.

Annual Report

Within the context of the developed world, rudeness during routine interaction is now becoming as commonplace as it is ubiquitous. Rudeness has very profound implications on the overall communication and feedback networks that are present during a typical conversation. There are numerous causes and effects of rudeness during predictable conversations. The causes and effects are as varied as they are complex. However, in almost every scenario there are specific fundamental attributes that contribute to the use of rudeness. Many of these fundamental attributes can be avoided, which helps to foster a more collaborative conversation in regards to communication. Without appropriate awareness of these fundamental attributes, rudeness can negatively impact both communication and the relationships imbedded within those respective communications. The effects of rudeness are also quite varied as they will affect different individuals in different ways. Much like the causes of rudeness, the effects of rudeness are anchored in common underlying facts that help determine what the effect on the individual will be. All in all, the effects of rudeness on individual communications, and their subsequent relationships are both far reaching and profound.

To begin, as mentioned in the introduction, the causes of rudeness are varied. However there are often two common denominators in regards to its occurrence. The first is stress. Stress can occur in a varied of ways, but its presence often precludes rudeness. Stressful situations cause individuals to react in a rash and short-term oriented fashion. Stressed individuals often only see the near-term without any regard to the long-term implications of their actions. This short-term focus leads to aggressive behaviors which ultimately lead to rudeness. The most common occurrence is with emails. During particularly stressful periods, individuals send emails that can be interpreted as rude. Now, in terms of the communications channel, email limits the immediate feedback component. As such, the receiver of emails can easily misconstrue the original intent of the sender. This misunderstanding in communication is often due to the wording and symbolism imbedded within the email. The wording ultimately can be misleading due in part to the stressful environment in which the original sender is operating in. For example, the sender may send an email stating, "I need the XYZ report now!!" With no feedback mechanism in place of the email, the receiver is forced to interpret the message without the aid of external stimuli such as voice inflexion, facial expressions, hand movements, conversation context, the overall tone of the message, and so forth. This interpretation is subject to error which then results in rudeness. By thinking in short-term manner and acting rash the original sender could easily have been perceived as "Rude," even if his original intent was anything but that. During these situations it is much better to simply wait and think in a rational manner before sending emails which can be misinterpreted. I summary, rudeness can be simply a misinterpretation of genuinely good message. This misinterpretation however, can lead to conflict that ultimately will unravel any well established and concrete relationship (Way, 2011).

Another example of the causes of rudeness occurs within the context of the work environment itself. Due primarily to the loss of jobs overseas coupled with massive layoffs, employees are forced to do more work during a typical workday. Many of the more prestigious, higher paying positions have been eliminated or cut due to lack of overall demand within the global economy. What remain are very stressful and less fulfilling jobs which ironically, more Americans are competing for within a poor labor market. These aspects, among others ultimately help contribute the concept of rudeness. This rudeness occurs by simply having a particular employee working more hours that he or she can physically perform. Rudeness becomes particularly profound when the individual is distressed and incurs feelings of fatigue. Job rudeness is due primarily to the continuing sense of frustration and tiredness. This often occurs when a person is dedicated to a career or cause and does not receive the rewards he or she expected. One cause of such rudeness is the time constraints embedded in the work environment. Employees have too much to do and too little time to do it. This, combined with an unpredictable day can contribute heavily to employee rudeness. In regards to age, gender, or socioeconomic status, this concept is true as well. Due to many of the aspects mentioned above, it is imperative for these groups to prevent rudeness by utilizing concepts that create balance and fulfillment within the work environment. Otherwise, the tendency for society to become consumed by their daily work duties will ultimately contribute heavily to their potential for rudeness (Cohen, 2006).
