¶ … Role of Rational Reasoning in Problem Solving

It is a well-known axiom that rational reasoning leads to effective decision making. However, a wealth of evidence indicates that people generally do not think in accordance with the rational principles described by decision theory. The failure of people to pursue rational reasoning in problem solving is largely attributed to the nature of individual subjectivity as well as a general failure to think through all aspects of a problem or decision (Hardman & Harries, 2002, para 1-2). Although there is a great deal of merit in the preceding observation, I personally subscribe to the view that consciousness of bounded rationality and subjectivity can lead to deliberate application of sound rational reasoning through, for example, the conscientious use of critical thinking skills and decision making models.

The view that it is possible to apply sound rational reasoning in problem solving situations is based on my own personal experience. Indeed, ever since I learnt the benefits of critical thinking, I strive to approach any problem, be it in the personal or professional arena, with rational reasoning. For instance, there was a time when I was faced with a real dilemma vis-a-vis my career path. This problem situation occurred shortly after I graduated from High School when I was faced with a choice between a college education and a full-time job with a large multinational company.

True, that many college students manage to juggle the demands of a job with that of obtaining a good college education. In my case, however, such a course of action was out of the question at that point in time, since certain personal responsibilities entailed devoting a great deal of time to my family's needs. Thus, the choice was really between accepting the job and pursuing a college degree.

The decision I faced was not an easy one since the job in question offered a good compensation package, employee benefits, and even the prospect of advancement to a managerial position in the future. Naturally, therefore, I had to weigh those benefits against that of a college education. On the one hand, the job offered promised immediate economic gains and bright future prospects. On the other hand, however, I was highly aware that investing in a college education would ultimately lead to better paying and perhaps more satisfying jobs. Thus, I was faced with a situation, which involved an opportunity cost irrespective of the choice made.

This realization finally led me to exercising my critical thinking ability. In other words, I followed a process of compiling and organizing relevant data and thoughts, which I felt would enable logical thinking and a well thought out decision. On completion of this exercise, I realized that I would necessarily have to seek further guidance in solving my problem since the alternatives I faced continued to be equally attractive.

It was at this point in time that I realized the need for a good decision making model. With this knowledge, I set out to research various decision making models, finally settling for the rational model, which seemed to be most appropriate to the situation I faced. Indeed, I found the rational model to be highly effective since it is based on an economic view of decision making and is, therefore, grounded on goals/objectives, alternatives, consequences and optimality (Lahti, 1996).
