Baxter-People or Penguins
Baxter argues that in order to solve our environmental problems we must recognize that our objective is an optimal state of pollution. Discuss how his optimality condition compares to that used in economics.
An optimal condition exists based upon several larger goals these include: wasting resources, every human being offered with the ability to have an even handed approach in regards to resources vs. The environment and the ability to seize upon new opportunities. These conditions exist in order to advance society and civilization. The way that this relates to economics, is to illustrate that more of a focus must be placed on helping to achieve these larger objectives. This is because humans will have an impact on the world around them regardless of the practices which are utilized. When this happens, the ecology will continue to experience similar issues. The only difference is that a more even handed approach must be taken in helping to advance civilization. (Pojman, 2012)
Baxter states that his observations about environmental problems are people-oriented and gives six reasons why he thinks this is the only tenable starting point for analysis. Explain whether you agree or disagree with his position in your explanation you must specifically discuss at least one of his six reasons.
Six reasons why Baxter believes that environmental problems are people orientated include: no position corresponds with the way everyone thinks, massive destruction does not occur from humankind's dependency on the ecosystem, what is good for humans is assisting other life forms, no other system is administrable, wildlife / plants are an ends to a means and environmental issues raise very complex questions. In the case of wildlife and plants as an end to a means, it is clearly an inappropriate way of thinking. This is from taking a very arrogant and self-centered point-of-view about the way humans are interacting with the world. When in reality, everyone is a part of the larger ecosystem that is dependent upon supporting the primary objectives of other organisms. As they are destroyed, this will have negative impacts life. Hooper-Mercantilism
Explain mercantilism in your own words. What would a mercantilist think of trade agreements like NAFTA?
Mercantilism is when one nation is seeking to gain an advantage over the others through controlling a large amount of natural resources and using them to become more competitive against others. The basic objectives are to use these areas, to produce a host of products and send them to trading partners in order to realize gains an over them. Mercantilists would think of free trade agreements as the natural extension of these policies. This is taking place by having a number of markets to flood with different goods / services, access to cheap labor and greater control of natural resources. (Hooper, 2010)
What are the six things that an individual can do with U.S. dollars? Which of those things would benefit the U.S. How does this help make the case against mercantilism?
