Basic Computer Knowledge: Understanding the Basic Tools and Features

While many students lament the challenges of occasional sluggish processing times and non-intuitive interfaces, far too many may realize just how fortunate they are to enjoy the wide array of benefits that computers bring to the nursing education table. Indeed, understanding the basic tools and features of using a computer is not longer a luxury but is rather the foundation of modern life. Although I have a lifetime of basic experience using computers with a corresponding fundamental knowledge of these resources, I have come to more fully appreciate the critical importance of understanding these tools and features in today’s healthcare education and professional environments (Affum, 2021).

Besides understanding the standard suite of applications that are commonly found on most PCs (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, graphic design, etc.), it is also essential to hone research skills to identify the most relevant sources as well as the most effective methods for participating in course discussions. Likewise, accessing online course materials, submitting assignments, and engaging in virtual discussions have all contributed to the nursing education process. For example, in our course discussions, my computer skills have proven invaluable since they allow me to efficiently research and evaluate relevant information online thereby supporting my points with credible, juried sources (Alkhaledi et al., 2024).
