Traffic jams: How to avoid them and how to deal with them

It happens to everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car. You are rolling along, when suddenly the cars in front of you come to a standstill. There is no red light but you soon realize you are frozen in space. What causes a traffic jam? According to the Freakanomics blog, the usual reason for a traffic jam is that "one driver's slowing down creates a ripple effect that moves backwards through traffic, grinding everything to a halt for miles" (What causes traffic jams," Freakanomics, 2008). Traffic jams illustrate how even a small error can cause major headaches for countless numbers of people. Rubber-necking during an accident; a slow driver refusing to get out of the left lane; or improper direction of traffic when one lane is closed can all create miles of congested roads. This paper will suggest the best ways to deal with the problems of traffic jams.

First and foremost, the best way to avoid traffic jams is to stay out of traffic. Public transportation is often an effective alternative to get from Point A to Point B. In a city. If this is not a viable option, then car-pooling with individuals at your office can help you more easily avoid the dreaded traffic jam. Fewer cars on the road mean less of a risk of traffic jams for everyone. The more people consolidate their daily driving, the more pleasant that driving will be for everyone. If it is feasible with your work or job schedule, telecommuting to work on some days or taking online classes can reduce the need to be on the road for long periods of time.

A second way to avoid traffic is to prepare yourself for the risk of getting stuck in traffic by taking precautions. If you are a daily commuter to work or school, leave before rush hour to ensure that you are less likely to be on the road as the majority of the public. Even if this means arriving a little early, it is better than sitting in miles of cars at a standstill. Once on the road, keep abreast of traffic information so you can avoid the most-affected roadways. Be aware of alternate routes to take.
