Enhancing Postoperative Patient Safety: A Quality Improvement Initiative on Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)
Introduction and Background
Healthcare quality and safety are critical components of postoperative care, particularly for patients undergoing procedures that involve Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC). Recent studies indicate a significant risk for adverse events related to MAC, including hypotension, hypoxia, and delayed recovery (Alzanbagi et al., 2022). These complications can lead to extended hospital stays, readmissions, and higher healthcare costs. Therefore, it is vital to develop initiatives to optimize the safety and quality of care in these patients.
Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to implement a comprehensive quality improvement initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of care for inpatient postoperative patients who have been given MAC. This initiative seeks to standardize care protocols, improve monitoring and reporting mechanisms, and enhance interdisciplinary communication to prevent potential complications and improve patient outcomes.
Target Audience
The primary target audience for this proposal includes anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare providers involved in perioperative and postoperative care. Administrators and policy-makers in our healthcare facility would also form part of the target audience as their support and approval are crucial for the implementation and success of the proposed initiative.

Interprofessional Collaboration
In order to enhance the safety and quality of care for inpatient postoperative patients who have been given Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC), an interprofessional collaboration is crucial. Here is how each professional can contribute:
Anesthesiologists: They play a pivotal role as they administer MAC and manage the patient during the perioperative period. They will contribute to the development of standardized protocols for anesthesia administration, monitoring, and immediate postoperative care. Their input based on their experience and expertise is vital in shaping practical, efficient, and safe...…of care from the patients' perspective. To gauge this, surveys using validated tools such as the HCAHPS survey will be conducted (Zun et al., 2019). This instrument assesses patients' experiences and perspectives on the hospital care they received, offering valuable patient-centric data.
To gain qualitative insights, surveys and interviews are also proposed with staff, patients, and their families. Open-ended questions would be utilized to obtain comprehensive feedback and deeper insights into the implementation and impact of the initiative. Feedback from these surveys and interviews would offer valuable perspectives on the initiative's effectiveness and help identify potential areas for improvement.
Process measures are another component of this evaluation strategy. Monitoring adherence to the newly implemented protocols would assess how effectively the initiative is being implemented and pinpoint areas where further education or reinforcement might be required. Plus, regular review meetings with the interprofessional team are recommended. These meetings can provide a platform for ongoing assessment and adjustment of the initiative, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness.
