Furthermore, the Bible has influenced the evolution of language. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Old and New Testament are filled with phrases and maxims that have become part of common vernacular, such as "nothing new under the sun" from Ecclesiastics. One of the overarching themes of this course has been to approach the Bible as a multi-authored collection. Each book possesses unique tones and perspectives that emerge upon close and comparative readings. The collective aspect of the Bible becomes especially clear when reading the Gospels of the New Testament. The alternative perspectives of the life of Jesus of Nazareth sometimes offer contradictory stories and interpretations of his life. Learning about the historical time frame for the Gospels surprised me considerably, as it too often seems that the books of the Bible were written concurrently.

Nothing in particular bothered me about studying the Bible from an academic perspective. I entered the course with an open mind and I leave the course with a mind full of knowledge about the historicity, methodologies, and literary perspectives on one of the most seminal written texts in human history. In fact, after taking this course I have a far greater appreciation of both the Old and New Testaments. Coming from a family with a largely secular outlook on life, I entered the course with a degree of skepticism and even mental resistance. Now I feel that the Bible is no longer a dusty book on a shelf but rather, I see how it can be used as a valuable source material and insight into the

Reading the Bible from an academic perspective also illuminates how the worldview of Western worlds has been formed. For instance, the strict monotheism preached in both Old and New Testaments pervades modern society, as does the dualism evident in all Biblical texts. While some of the books are tedious reads, most are filled with fascinating imagery and allegory. The New Testament is especially unique in its fascinating treatment of supernatural powers such as the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Regardless of the reader's personal beliefs, anyone can appreciate the Bible from a historical and a literary perspective.
As a religious text, the Bible cannot be considered in absence of its theological and moral frameworks. Because we avoided directly analyzing the Bible along theological or philosophical lines, I eagerly anticipate conducting future investigations into the more abstract elements of Biblical readings. I believe that the historical and critical analyses of the Bible we performed in this course will provide sound, solid foundations for academic inquiry. However, it could be helpful to analyze the Bible in terms of its impact on modern cultures such as its impact on women, on politics, and on race relations.

Aristotle began as the student of Plato, but a reader is hard pressed to find any particular similarities between the worldviews of the two. In fact, if we have studied Platonic Dualism and Plato's accompanying Theory of Forms, it starts to look like Aristotle's philosophy is based upon the attempt to be as un-Platonic as possible.
