Last reviewed: November 18, 2021 ~2 min read
Abstract

This research examines self-care management strategies for bipolar disorder patients to reduce hospital readmissions across diverse living situations. The study addresses the significant healthcare costs and quality of life impacts associated with psychiatric readmissions. Through evidence-based analysis, it identifies targeted self-management approaches for patients in various circumstances including homelessness, group homes, family settings, and employment situations.

Bipolar disorder leads to individual and societal burdens owing to the fact that it is associated with high cost of healthcare. According to Barekatain et al. (2013) hospital readmissions reduce the quality of life of bipolar patients and their families. The authors further suggest that readmissions in hospital puts pressure on hospitals as their resources are limited. Therefore, it would be prudent to educate staff on ways of reducing readmissions so as to reduce associated readmission costs and improve patients’ quality of life. Adnanes et al. (2020) suggest that self-care management strategies happen to be useful in reducing readmissions. The purpose of the following questions is to help identify the most appropriate self-care management method to help patients with bipolar disorder.
