Brainstorming the Idea That I Am Brainstorming

Last reviewed: October 9, 2013 ~3 min read
Abstract

There are five exercises completed within this work. The author is asked to read an essay and then brainstorm and concoct one's own essay while undergoing a number of exercises that will help the storyline flow and structure of the eventual essay. The author has chosen to look at a bully that tries to redeem one's self once he realizes what kind of person he is but finds resistance in changing the perceptions of others who still revile him.

¶ … Brainstorming

The idea that I am brainstorming is the idea of a bully who pushes his weight around and says cruel things at the drop of the hat. This will be the starting point. However, through the feedback from others and the isolation that is encountered as a result of the bullying, including a pivotal point that is the climax of the story, the bully will realize just how caustic and vile they are acting and will try to change for the better. The bully redeeming one's self is obviously not going to be automatic as people will be leery of the bully because of his prior actions and changing one's personality so completely and so quickly can be disorienting and it can take a lot of adjustment. The lesson topics is whether or why people trust others, why people bully others and how hard it can be to change perceptions of others, victims of bullies and those who observe the bully in particular, if/when it happens. This topic obviously has some modern context and merit and it will in many cases write itself because many people will identify with being a bully and/or being the victim of a bully at one time or another.

Assignment Four -- Transition Exercise

The use of a question in item four is perhaps improper because, first, it does not follow good essay form and, second, it imposes that the reader will have a certain point they might or definitely do not have. The pattern continues in the second sentence where the writer presupposes what the reader will "assume." The first example is not bad but it's not really a transition. It is just another "reason" that supposedly builds on something prior. There is no clear segue from one point to another…it is just another point for a prior-mentioned topic. The second item is also not a good transition as it is just one sentence in a broader point. Item four is just a point of analysis and opinion. The firth item is by far the best example of a transition because it shows that it identifies a new point (environmental regulations) and why it is important (global warming)
